Everyone who went to Butler has a love-hate relationship with the town, but there are many things about Butler that we can all relate to.
1. The Intermediate High School was a prison with no windows.
2. …But at least there was air conditioning.
3. And then you realized you took that air conditioning for granted when you got to the Senior High and realized it was a sauna.
4. Giant cookies and Bosco cheese sticks with marinara were a must at lunch.
5. Everyone looked forward to Jim’s Tuscany Sub day, and we all put the hot mayo and Lay's potato chips on it.
6. If you didn’t dip your chicken nuggets into your mashed potatoes then you were weird.
7. “Hoochie Season” was Mr. Schnur’s favorite term when the weather started getting nice.
8. All shorts had to be fingertip length, and if you wore a tank top with straps less than 1 inch wide you were sent to the office.
9. Remember when the principals tried to ban yoga pants?
10. People would go to the football games to watch the band, not the football team.
11. The track and swim team would always dominate.
12. And all the other sports would make it to the playoffs every year, but lose in the first round.
13. Every team dreaded running campus loops.
14. We had a diverse student body, to say the least.
There were the hicks and the city kids, and then there were the rich kids and the average joes.
15. But of course, to North Allegheny, we were all hicks, and they would let us know that with every student section they provided.
Because apparently they thought wearing plaid to every football, basketball, hockey game, etc. would make us upset? FUNA, am I right?
16. People would get to the banana parking lot at 6 a.m. just to get a good spot, and if you got a spot in the administration lot or the lower lot, you were expected to sit there for a good 20 minutes after school let out.
17. People on Hick Hill would basically have a tailgate every morning.
18. When people hear your mascot was a Golden Tornado they don’t know how to respond.
19. But you know that tornado warning siren really pumped everyone up before games.
20. Your Facebook feed is always filled with news that someone is engaged, married, pregnant or arrested.
21. When you tell people how big your graduating class was their jaws drop.
22. Assassins were taken very seriously, and if you weren’t sitting in a bush for 3 hours waiting for your target to get home from practice, then you did not play the game right.
23. Every girl had a crush on Mr. Rubeo, young Mr. Shingleton, and Mr. McKay.
24. BTTV feature videos were on the most random things, but somehow, everyone was able to laugh at them.
25. Everyone always loved the foreign language teachers.
26. Prom walk is an event for the entire community that takes hours to watch, and while some people arrived in limos and party buses, others arrived on tractors.
27. Half days at the Junior High meant everyone knew to meet up at Cummings.
28. You took a class called Seasonal Crafts and it tended to be one of the most popular classes at the Senior High.
29. We would all take Summer Gym so we didn’t have to take gym during the school year.
30. Everyone went crazy at the school dances when The Wop, Teach Me How To Dougie, 2 Step, or any LMFAO song was played.
31. Prom weekend mattered and had more preparation than actual prom.
32. The Sequinettes were 110 percent part of the band, and the dance and flag team were equally loved.
BMB for life!
33. If our high school could be compared to a movie, it would be “Mean Girls.”
34. Our community ALWAYS comes together when we lose one of our own.
35. Being a part of the school musicals felt like you were preparing for your Broadway debut.
But no matter how far away we drift from Butler, we know that it is always home, and we know that the friends we made at Butler will be our friends for life. We all talk about how much we hated Butler, but this is the place we grew up, and as many negatives it had, it shaped us into the amazing people we are today. You know if anyone talks down on Butler, we will defend it until the day we die.
