32 Things People Are Grateful For
The Chicago Traveler

I've become the person who writes about grappling with empathy and gratefulness. I don't necessarily think that it's a bad thing, but sometimes I get so self-involved with how I handle those things and I forget that there's a whole human population going through the same things I am.

Emotions are running high across the nation, and I've exhausted myself in every possible class discussion, essay, and response questions. "Suadade", a Portuguese word for the sense of longing, melancholy, or nostalgia, is the only word that's really fit my Google search of, "What's a word that describes feeling a lot of feelings?".

While I am feeling my own warped version of suadade, I am also feeling the bittersweet tinges of gratefulness and inspiration due to my unwavering (and desperately unwanted) optimism. So, I turned to the things I'm grateful for despite the difficult political and social atmosphere and asked others to put in their two cents for what they're grateful for, too. Here're 32 things people are grateful for:

1. "My family."

2. "My health."

3. "Lazy Saturdays with people I love."

4. "My big :)"

5. "The opportunities my parents have given me and still do."

6. "My voice in society."

7. "I am grateful for my mistakes."

8. "Food!"

9. "Good sex."

10. "Happiness."

11. "All the opportunities I took."

12. "Swirling leaf tornadoes."

13. "Hands brushing against each other."

14. "Brie."

15. "Kisses from the sun."

16. "To be alive at the same time as the legendary Ms. Britney Spears!"

17. "For the friends that saw me at my worst and still chose to help me find myself all over again."

18. "My mother, she does EVERYTHING for me...love you, mom."

19. "My sorority, it gave me a new group of people who I know I can go to whenever and with whatever and they will always have my back."

20. "Going to sleep knowing I'm safe every night."

21. "A supportive and loving family."

22. "Dogs."

23. "Friends. All of the friends."

24. "French fries."

25. "Hamilton."

26."My girlfriend."

27. "Morning sunrises."

28. "The mountains."

29. "Sequoia trees."

30. "Patrick Swayze in Ghost."

31. "Fall in Chicago."

32. "Special episodes of Teen Chopped."

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
