31 Things I Learned In High School

Besides algebra and history, of course.

31 Things I Learned In High School

It's the sad (and glad!) truth: I'm done with high school.

But just because I'm done with high school doesn't mean that everybody else is.

Thus, as a high school graduate, I share these bits and pieces of advice that I've learned in the past four years. Share to spread the word (and save a life!)

Underclassmen: take notes.

1. YES, your grades actually do matter.

2. Your teachers are there to help you, you know.

3. These will be years you look back on fondly, so make sure you make them great!

4. You don't have to be friends with everyone.

5. Likewise, not everybody will want to be friends with you.

6. Prepare for college EARLY.

7. Apply to scholarships EARLY.

8. Look at number 7 again. You WILL need the money.

9. Do your homework. Ten years down the line, you'll realize how important it was.

10. Drama isn't worth anyone's time. Especially not yours.

11. No boy/girl is worth crying over. You're in high school after all.

12. Take LOTS of pictures so that you remember the good times.

13. Keep a journal so you can reminisce and laugh about your crazy high school years.

14. Remember that the dark days will pass. You just have to be strong.

15. Connect with your classmates and teachers on social media after you graduate.

16. Buy a yearbook for every year, because each year is worth remembering differently.

17. Join lots of clubs. Not only will you get free food, certificates, and even medallions, but you'll meet new people and have tons of fun!

18. Stay in touch with everyone, even your enemies. In the future, what's past won't matter as much.

19. Be good to people. It really isn't hard.

20. Learn how to drive early because it will be EXTREMELY handy in junior and senior year.

21. Don't freak out if you're not popular because nobody cares once you've graduated.

22. Be smart when choosing friends.

23. That said, choose friends you can picture in your future.

24. Talk to everyone, even if you don't initially like them. You'll learn a lot.

25. Never pass up an opportunity to hang out with your peers because you may never get those chances again after high school.

26. Try everything. You'll learn more about yourself and the world that way.

27. Don't be afraid to speak up for what you think is right.

28. Take your SATs/ACTs early. It'll make things fifty times easier.

29. Continuing from number 23, be friends with people who have different views than your own. You'll be happy you did.

30. Smile at everyone, because everyone needs a little light in their lives.

31. And, finally, learn to let go. Things happen. Life happens. So let it happen the way it's supposed to.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
