31 Ideas For Gifts For Readers That Aren't Books

Book lovers enjoy lots of things, especially if they are related to books or reading. I've compiled a list of stuff directly and indirectly related to books and book series. Not all of these may apply to every reader you know, but I think there's a wide enough variety to get you away from books that you may find something new and unique that other friends might not have thought of. Most of these apply to a wide range of books, but some only have pieces for major book series. I hope you have lots of fun shopping for yourself and others and that gift giving becomes a little bit less stressful!

1. Bookmarks

Bookmarks are always a good choice for the average book lover. If they like to read, chances are they'll need one. Not to mention there are tons of fun varieties of bookmarks!

2. Book duct tape

Duct Tape has a lot of types. There's an almost guarantee that there will be something in there your friend will like and they could use it to fix and repair book spines, make water proof book sleeves, decorate their bookshelf, and more.

3. Bookends

Bookends may be useful for those who have room on their shelves or will make room so the can use these awesome pieces. Bookends come in many shapes and forms and are a great piece to fancy up those bookshelves in the living room.

4. Posters

Posters are a nice gift and most books have them. They come in a range of sizes and styles, and the artwork can range from the book's cover art to fan-made artwork, depending on the stores you look at.

5. Fandom Jewelry

Lots of popular books often have inspired pieces of jewelry. These come in a variety of forms: earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings. If you know your friend is interested in a popular book series, that'd be a good place to start looking for fandom jewelry.

6. Fandom Subscription Boxes/Magazines

If your friend likes a wide range of books, you might want to look into buying them a short term subscription to a magazine or subscription box dedicated to books of their type of fandoms. Personally, I like the Fandom of the Month subscription box.

7. Collages

If you're feeling creative, you could make a collage of their favorite books, book quotes, book art, and add other more personal friend stuff. It's a nice creative way and cheap. All you need is a computer, printer, cardboard, glue, and some time.

8. Fandom Clothes and Scarves

If you know or are good at estimating sizes, you might want to look towards the clothing section of book items. Ranging from quotes to art, there are plenty of choices in t-shirts, dresses, scarves, and socks.

9. Fandom Inspired Food

Nothing says love more than delicious food! Cakes or cookies could be decorated with some type of book icon or spell out some type of quote.

10. Fandom Inspired Party

If you are a good organizer, this may be a good gift idea. Throw your friend an awesome party with the theme of his favorite book. Go as big or small in the details as you like.

11. Book to Movie/TV Adaptations

If one of you friend's favorite books has been adapted into a movie or TV series (and your friend enjoys it), then buying her the DVD of whichever provides her another way to enjoy the book series she so loves.

12. Funko Pops

Funko Pops are a fun little gift to give a friend. There is a wide variety of these guys, spanning most of the popular books, TV series, and movies.

13. Gift cards

There is really no way to go wrong with buying a gift card for readers. You can get them from online or local bookstores or book-inspired stores like Red Bubble that sells book-ish style pieces.

14. Bags

Bags are always helpful, especially when lugging around piles of books to read. This is a great gift that will be useful and cute.

15. Signs

Signs can be placed pretty much everywhere, and are a nice simple gift that comes in a variety of styles and fonts. They are pretty easy to make yourself or get customized.

16. Mugs

Everyone loves hot chocolate, tea, coffee, or other hot drinks that mugs would be perfect for. Provide a nice mug for your friend to drink out of as he reads his favorite book.

17. Candles

This may sound odd, but there are candles that are themed by books. The scents are wonderful and will hopefully remind your friend of her favorite book.

18. Book Lights

Helpful to all readers as they read one more chapter before bed that inevitably results in a night long binge -reading session.

19. Earphones

Some readers love to listen to audio books; others like to listen to music while reading a book in their lap. Regardless of which, a set of earphones would not go amiss to help them keep listening to their favorite stuff!

20. Pencils

These are nice for the readers still in school, especially. Nothing more inspiring during a test than pencils telling you your favorite book quotes!

21. Notebooks

Especially nice for students in school, but are usable by pretty much everyone. Notebooks are a fun way to express your love of reading while still being useful for everyday things.

Calendars are a good bet for alternative presents. Big or small, calendars help readers keep track of how many books they read a month.

24. Magnets

You can get magnets pretty cheaply either pre-made or customized.

25. Lip Balm

These lip balms do double duty for your lips: helping them and bring a smile to them. This is a fun little gift that lots of people may like, not just readers.

26. Make-up and Nail Polish

If your reader is into make-up or nail polish, then she might appreciate colors inspired and named after a character or place or whatever else related to her favorite book series. Or if you also like it, maybe do make-up or nails for each other with a book theme.

27. Pillow

Pillows are nice for when readers curl up with a good book. You can buy one yourself or make your own pillow cover.

28. E-Reader Cases

If your friend enjoys e-books, then they probably have a nook or kindle that would love a new cover.

29. Transparent Book Weight

If your reader likes reading outside or with food (and has the knack for spilling), this is a good gift option.

30. Clock

Readers often get lost in fictional worlds for hours, so it'd be good to give them a clock to at least pretend they are aware of time.

If the book series is big enough, chances are there will be some type of board game made with the book theme. This is a good way to encourage a reader to socialize but still have the comfort of books.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
