Marching band was hands down one of the best experiences in my high school career. I learned what dedication truly meant, and at the same time, I made life long friendships. If you were in marching band, you know that it was not easy achieving your band's highest potential, but it was worth it. The journey to the end of the season requires riding the struggle bus starting from day 1 of band camp.

1. Being occupied every other Friday night with home football games

2. Having your entire Saturday taken up

3. Suffering band hangovers on Sundays

4. Basically not having a social life outside of band during marching season

5. Full-day band camp

6. Practicing outside in what felt like 100 degrees

7. Awkward glove tan lines

8. Permanent sock tan lines

9. Forever sore leg muscles

10. Constantly being around the same people, also known as not having a social life outside of band

11. The weather suddenly changes from blistering heat to North Pole weather. There's no in between.

12. Your lips are frozen but you have to hit that hold hard.

13. And your fingers can't keep up with how fast the music is because they're cold.

14. Hand warmers are life.

15. Arguments with other sections

16. Little fights within our own section

17. If we got a dollar for every ounce of turf rubber we collect in our shoes, we'd be millionaires.

18. Changing in and out of our uniforms

19. Not being able to eat in our uniforms

20. Forgetting bobby pins on competition days

21. Band related shirts making up 50 percent of our wardrobe

22. That same 7-minute tune stuck in your head all day long

23. Having to empty your spit valve while marching

24. Every so often, when we're walking normally, "left, left, left" rings in our ears.

25. The drum line not being in time with the drum major

26. The feeling when your director calls out someone in the entire band and you know it was your section so you wanna yell at them, but you gotta chill

27. The feeling when you start learning new sets that you have not 100 percent completely memorized the music to.

28. Hearing all the band drama

29. Being dragged into the band drama

30. Did I mention the lack of social life outside of band?

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
