Whenever someone asks me what I'm majoring in, and I respond with "English," they automatically assume that I want to become an English teacher. Although that's a popular profession for those in my major, there are so many other opportunities for my fellow English-lovers to pursue out of college (or grad school).

1. CEO of a company

Minimum wage? How about maximumwage!

2. Textbook Editor

From elementary school all the way through grad school, text books are used in almost every classroom, and they need someone to edit them!

3. Publishing Assistant

Turn someone's dream into a reality when you help publish their first children's book or novel.

4. Lawyer

Many English majors go on to law school to become a lawyer - and the starting salary isn't bad.

5. Author

Love to write? Then you can make some money by creating your own stories.

6. Entrepreneur

Want a flexible schedule, and maybe have a product you think you can sell? Become an entrepreneur!

7. Poet

If poetry really strikes a chord with you, then write your own verses. Who knows, maybe you could be the next Robert Frost or T.S. Eliot.

8. Journalist

If you love getting the dirt on real-life stories, maybe journalism is the job for you.

9. High School Principal

Although many principals start out as teachers, you can make your way up to a job with more money and responsibility.

10. Professional Blogger

Blogging doesn't have to be just for fun - you can make money just by telling other people on the internet your daily stories!

If you're good with numbers and communication, you could help a company market its products.

Want an office job? Try entering the fast-paced world of buying and selling stocks.

If a corporation is big enough, they'll need someone to answer the phones and keep an organized calendar. It's a great place to start and you can work your way up!

Combining the arts with English, an artistic director picks and chooses which works will be performed by a theatre company.

If you have a way with words and think you can handle the rough world of politics, a member of the Congressional staff.

Like a high school principal, a college dean oversees students and faculty at a university. You could be the next Dean of the English Department.

The SATs are often make or break with college, so a lot of high school students will be lining up for a brush-up on their English skills.

If you don't want to become a lawyer, you can be the next best thing: a legal assistant. You're responsible for the lawyer's legal work, which is still very important.

If you want to make use of your communication skills, try becoming a public relations writer. You can generate promotional content and publicity when incorporating your English skills as well.
