One of my personal favorite sources of creativity is found in others writing. I love reading the words other people put on the page.
Three sources I use to experience such creativity are:
1. poetry books
2. poem blogs
3. spoken word poetry.
In this article, I will give suggestions (books and websites) for these 3 sources! Enjoy!
1. Poetry Books
These are the easiest source that you can find and the one that is most physical! Any bookstore will have a poetry section. The books in this area may be on how to write poetry, but mostly you will find a collection of poems by authors. Some books I personally suggest are Pretty Dirty Things by Michael Faudet and Beautiful Chaos by R.M. Drake. These collections will contain poetry, short stories, and occasionally photography or illustrations.
2. Poem Blogs
These blogs are a perfect way to read a new poem and expand your creative reach. The poem above is found on Tumblr and I know there are plenty more out there! If you feel like getting super creative, you could always start your own daily poetry blog using sites that provide free web pages like Tumblr or Weebly or Wordpress.
3. Spoken Word Poetry
Spoken Word is one of the most beautiful ways to experience poetry. By hearing a person's perception of how the poem should be read out loud, we can truly understand the feeling that the author wished to convey. Spoken Word can be viewed a few different places, though I mainly use YouTube. I have subscribed to a few channels such as Button Poetry, Slam Find, and All Def Poetry. I will link here two of my favorite spoken word performances - Sarah Kay's "Point B" and Sabrina Benaim's "Explaining My Depression to My Mother."
Thank you so much for giving this a read! Show up for your imagination and allow your mind to indulge in creativity!
