Finding motivation to achieve that one thing you've been striving for is harder than most of us will admit. We all dream of becoming something special in this world, but sometimes we find it hard to put in the work to get there. It's easy to get comfortable with where we're at even if we aspire to be something much greater. Fortunately, there are a few tactics you can use to get over that first hump.
1. Envision the end result.
If we visualize ourselves in the end result reality, if we push ourselves to see the finish line, we can find the motivation to get off the couch and start putting actual time and effort toward whatever aspiration we have.
For example, I like to sing. With all the Instagram-famous singers out there, it's easy to get discouraged by the steep competition I'm up against. By reaching out to those musicians and learning about what it's like to live in their shoes, I can use that information to form a mindset that matches the result I am looking for.
It's much more challenging to start something than it is to keep it moving once you do start it. Picture yourself in the reality you want to be in and let that drive you to get started.
2. Choose a small and simple action.
The road to becoming a musical artist is a long one, as is the road for most careers. If you're like me, the first thing you do is try to figure out how to conquer this massive life goal quickly and devour your hopes and dreams in one bite.
We've all heard the phrase, "take it one step at a time." Well, that couldn't be more relevant here. Any goal this big can't be achieved all at once.
In order to maintain motivation, assign yourself little tasks that yield consistent growth and progress toward your end result.
For me, the very first step would be to set up my microphone and software needed to record. It's a minor task, but it's still progress. And if you're making progress then you're maintaining motivation.
3. Write it down.
It's one thing to think of getting something done and another to write it down. If you're serious about giving your reality a makeover then you should consider scheduling those various tasks on your calendar.
You're more likely to do something that is on your calendar. Since you wrote it down, you don't have to worry about forgetting about it. Although this is simple advice, it is still effective in making progress.
With the task written down, it's out of your mind and you can focus on the task at hand. You have a sense of a timeline and schedule. This organization and reduce stress and boost motivation.
"Inspiration is one thing and you can't control it, but hard work is what keeps the ship moving. Good luck means, work hard. Keep up the good work." - Kevin Eubanks
We all aspire to be great things, but the journey to get there is tough. Starting the journey is even tougher. To stay motivated, tackle your dreams in baby steps, plan out what needs to get done by making a schedule and imagine yourself at the finish line.
If you utilize these basic principles, you'll revolutionize your process of getting things done.
