Getting a job is a herculean task nowadays. If you are fortunate enough to land a nice job, you will want to keep it.
1. Be On Time
This is by far the most important of all of the tips. If you show up late a lot to your job, you will not look like a good candidate for promotions. You will also seem to be lazy or unproductive, perhaps your boss may even think you are unable manage your time properly. So, to avoid this, make sure to keep a good sleep schedule, so you don't oversleep. Furthermore, always add an extra 5-10 minutes to your estimated travel time. If your GPS says it'll take you 10 minutes to drive to work in the morning, pretend it said 20 minutes, and leave accordingly. Furthermore, aim for 10 minutes before the expected time of arrival. If your boss tells you to be at the front door of the office at 6:00 A.M sharp, plan to arrive their at 5:50. This shows that you are attentive to detail and responsible.
2. Be Polite
No matter how many bs company policies are in place, and no matter how unfairly you think you are being treated, do not be rude. If you are rude around the workplace, or are prone to outbursts, you most likely won't be there long. Of course, this isn't to say that you shouldn't fight for yourself. If you are being treated unfairly, file a formal complaint to HR and don't let them give you the runaround; however, do this politely. Being polite is key to healthy workplace relationships. If you are polite to your coworkers and boss, even in the midst of turmoil, this shows that you are able to handle a multitude of situations and that you have the capacity to control your emotions in a professional setting. This will make you look like a very good candidate for promotion.
3. Work Hard, Do More
This should go without saying, but work hard. Don't just sit around in your office on your phone or browsing Facebook all day. Even if you finish your tasks for the day, don't just be lazy and sit around, actually do something productive. Ask your boss if there are any other tasks you can complete, get ahead on your tasks for tomorrow, help your coworkers around the office who need help, organize your desk, plan out your next few business moves, whatever it may be, do something productive. If your boss or coworkers notice you goofing off too much, it won't go well. Even if you are finished with your activities for the day, people will still see you as being lazy and unproductive. If you are seen as lazy and unproductive, you could lose your job.
