Summer is full of exciting days and adventures, but having no classes or homework leaves much time for boredom. Even though I have a job, I still find myself sitting about twiddling my fingers. Recently, i have thought about my days of boredom and how they have been spent. I realized that I have picked up four habits out of my boredom. Although these habits temporarily cure my boredom, they are not necessarily helpful or productive. Hopefully you can have a laugh at what I have chosen to do with my time.
With extra time, I have managed to watch an absurd amount of TV. I am not normally a big TV watcher, but when I am home from school and sitting around, I tend to turn it on. However, sometimes when I watch TV, I begin to get bored of starring at a screen, and the shows that I typically don't mind, begin to bother me. This annoyance lead me to begin watching shows I normally would ignore on the guide. I have been currently fascinated by cooking shows. The anxiety and time sensitivity of the show draws me in, and I can't seem to turn away from "Cupcake Wars." Watching these baking competitions is not a great use of my time, but it has drawn my interest in baking/cooking. All though, I cannot tell if it is more satisfying to bake a fresh cake by scratch, or to correctly guess the winning team on "Cupcake Wars."
On the topic of new TV shows, I have shifted my attention to shows dependent on luck and intelligence. Game shows have stolen my attention, and I cannot seem to stray away. To be honest, they are not all pointless, I feel that I am learning fun facts of information from these game shows. Things that I normally would not have came across. Family Feud has encouraged my competitive side. I confide in the game shows because the game show feels less like a tv screen and more like a game.
Like the game shows, which depend heavily on luck, I have similarly picked up another habit involving luck. On the deli across the street, I have began to purchase scratch cards. Each card is around $2, but the prize can be $20,000. The odds are low, but the excitement is high. Like the faults of gambling, putting money on scratch cards is dangerous because they become addictive. But, if you're careful with your spendings, scratch cards can be a fun way to bring a bit of excitement into your bored summer day.
Whether it be watching cooking shows, game shows, or trying your luck at a lottery, you can add some excitement into some dreary boring summer days. These competitive and anxiety inducing shows/games will be sure to draw your attention and sustain it!
