The Kentucky Derby is known across the country as "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports." The race has rich tradition and history in the US, and is a source of great pride for the city of Louisville. The University of Louisville even adjusts the school schedule to end before Derby week. The city is filled with festivals, parties, and events centered around the race, and nothing can compare to the atmosphere on the day of the Derby. From my experience, the attendees of the Kentucky Derby usually fit into three distinctive groups: tourists, students, and celebrities.
There are usually around 160,000 people that attend the Kentucky Derby each year, and many of them are tourists. Derby is one of the biggest events of the year, and a great reason for people to visit Kentucky. There is a pre-Derby parade, called the Pegasus Parade, that is fun and entertaining for people from out of town. There is also a Kentucky Derby museum for those who are more interested in the history of the races.
Derby week is an eventful time for high school and college students in Kentucky, even if they don't go to the Derby itself. Less prominent horse races are held on "Thurby," the Thursday prior to Derby. The following day is Oaks, where the female horses (fillies) race. Oaks is quite popular for high school students because many of them have the day off school, and it's less expensive to attend than Derby. Some students don't attend any horse racing event but celebrate with their friends and family, watching the Derby from home.
Another highlight of Derby is the celebrities that attend. Many sit in an area called Millionaires Row, which is luxurious indoor seating in Churchill Downs. The seats are incredibly expensive, but worth it as this area features lavish buffets, drinks, and a great view of the track. The celebrities also make their way to the red carpet, wearing their finest tuxes, dresses, and requisite extravagant hats.
If you are not from Kentucky, I encourage you to attend the Derby at least once in your life. It is an experience unlike anything else, filled with tradition and style.
