3 Tips For Halloweekend

Halloween is quickly approaching and for college students everywhere, the level of excitement could not be greater. October 31 falls on a Saturday night this year, what could be better!? Not only is Saturday on a weekend night, but it gives young adults everywhere a night between Thirsty Thursday and Halloween night to relax, i.e. Friday night. Now of course if you party hardcore, the date which Halloween lands on gives students everywhere three nights in a row to go out and party which is extremely exciting as well. What could be better than three nights of partying? Three nights of partying in three wicked costumes of your choice. In case you didn't know whether to do a couple costume, group costume, or costume by yourself, you can now do all three! Here are three tips to make sure you do Halloweekend right!

1. Be comfortable.

Although it's fun to try and impress someone with a neat costume you also have to be very careful. For those of you who wish to go the risque route, make sure you have a costume that is ready to endure a night of long walks, from party to party, hot crammed rooms, and lots of drunk people. Everyone wants to go out Halloween night so the amount of dd's is very low. Make sure you are wearing footwear that won't hurt your feet if you are walking a lot. Also, you don't want to have to be pulling down your skirt/dress every 5 steps so keep this in mind as well. The parties will be very crammed so if you are wearing a long sleeved costume, be warned, it will get very hot and you will feel like death. Finally, when you're surrounded by so many drunk people it is wise to be prepared in case someone starts to creep on you. People don't know what they are doing when they are under the influence so make sure you stay in groups and protect yourself against those who may prey on you.

2. Don't take treats or drinks from strangers.

Yes, I sound like your mother-but mothers do know best. This may seem like a rule we learned in kindergarten, but it is most important. There will be a lot of tasty looking snacks and drinks being handed out at these parties, but heed my warning and don't take them. You don't know what these drinks were made with or how much alcohol was put into them. If it's easy for someone to roofie a drink that you put down, it's even easier to roofie a drink that they made personally. The same goes for food. For some people it's funny to slip someone a pot brownie and see their reaction, but for the person who eats the brownie, it's a very different case. It's terrifying to have your body react a certain way and not know why. Be very careful with what you eat and drink, free things are always fun especially, in college. However, if you aren't at a school sponsored event- or the food isn't packaged - I would not take anything from anyone. Create your own Halloween inspired treats and drinks for you and your friends, it's better than guessing what you're ingesting.

3. Think outside the box.

Halloween is a holiday for the creative. So on this weekend it's advisable to think outside the box for costumes, party plans, etc. Be original in your costume choice, do something nobody has ever done before. It's a little awkward to see someone in the same costume as you, so try and think of one that nobody else will have. Ordinary objects, characters from your childhood, or the latest spotlight person- Shia LaBeouf- may be costume choices. You have three different days to plan for, which will be tough, but at least you're bound to have one unique costume. Think outside the box for what parties you go to as well! Ask around for who is planning parties and try and hit up the best combination so you can see the people you really want to see. It's also not bad to see if clubs by campus are having a Halloween themed party, there are so many places you could go, don't rule anything out. As for drinks and snacks look up cool recipes so you can really get into the holiday groove. Anything pumpkin or caramel is perfect for the fall season. Let the creative juices flow!

No matter what you plan to do this October 29 – October 31 remember to have fun! Really get into the Halloween spirit. Surround yourself with creative people that will go with the flow so you don't stress at all. Most importantly, be safe! You'll be surrounded by monsters all night! Make sure you have superhero friends around you who will have your back. Happy trick or partying!!

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
