3 Times Parks & Rec Predicted the Future

Parks & Rec ended it's run by jumping ahead to 2017 and making predictions about how would be. Little did they know that they know how right they would be.

Parks and Rec was fantastic at many things. It taught us how to treat ourselves, that you can achieve your dreams if you work hard enough including setbacks, and that waffles and friends are the most important things in life. But little did we know that Parks and Rec was giving us a glimpse into our impending world. Here are three times that Parks and Rec predicted the future.

1. Soda Tax - Aired in 2012

Yes, the infamous soda tax that brought on the downfall of City Councilwoman Knope. All Leslie wanted to do was help people live healthier lives and it ended up costing her her job.

The idea of putting an extra tax on soda seems simple and a win-win: the government brings in more money to fund projects without raising income tax, and people who oppose it will stop buying soda, which is an incredibly unhealthy beverage and make healthier choices. This is a complete option tax that you can either choose to partake in or not depending on your choice as a consumer. Yet the infamous town folk of Pawnee, who perfectly represent the American public, lost their minds and refused to have their 'rights' taken away from them.

Crazy right? Yes. BUT it is happening now and people are losing their minds. Berkeley, CA became the first city to impose this in 2014 and it had a very healthy affect on the city. Since then, other cities have voted this into action. Philadelphia being one of the latest. The soda tax was accepted into Philadelphia with as much grace as it was in Pawnee.

2. Knope v. Newport for City Council: Crazy Candidates & Recounts - Aired in 2011

Cleary the 2016 Presidential election was not the first time there has been craziness, stomach churning, eye rolling, and head smacking moments during a campaign, but this year's seemed extra cringe-worthy. Watching Donald Trump try to debate Hillary Clinton was the equivalent of watching this:

A smart, educated, and highly qualified Leslie Knope found herself in a neck in neck race with Bobby Newport who is a goofy millionaire loved by the everyman. Bobby beat out Leslie throughout the election by playing on people's fears and without presenting how he was going to fix any of the town's problems. Sound familiar? In the end, Bobby ended up winning by only a few votes, which forced Pawnee to do a recount. Sound familiar again? However, Leslie did end up winning as a result of the recount. I guess fiction can right some wrongs.

3. Gryzzl Tablets Always Listening - Aired in 2015

There were some 'minor flaws' that the Gryzzl tablets, which were still being prototyped, had when they appeared in the final season of Parks and Rec. One of those flaws was that the device was always listening to you. Always.

But today's companies have higher ethical and tech standards than that, right?

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
