3 Things The Great State Of Texas Taught Me

And I Couldn't Realize Them Until I Started To Move Away.

Let me just start with a disclaimer that I was not born here, but I still call Texas my home. I always was negative Nancy when it came to Texas though. However, it wasn't until I got closer and closer to move in day (and moving to a whole different state) that I started to appreciate the things that Texas has taught me. As I get ready to start packing my things I've started to reminisce about all the things I love about Texas, so these are the top 3 things I am most grateful to have been taught while growing up in the great state of Texas.

3. Tolerance for the heat

Granted you find this in most southern states, I have learned to deal with stepping outside and starting to sweat immediately. Having 30+ days of summer being 100+ degrees outside is something that many people don't get the wonderful opportunity to experience, so I feel like no matter where else I go even if it is hotter than it is here I can handle it and be a trooper through it.

2. Manners and Compassion

Southern hospitality is something that I always believed to be a myth. It wasn't until I was 16 and traveled to Philadelphia and New York that I realized it wasn't a myth. People up north just don't offer the same manners as the ones you're accustomed to in the south. There is no "yes ma'am, no ma'am, yes sir, no sir", no holding open the door for you (and even if you do there is no thank you), people don't just smile and wave at you when you pass them by, which are all things that I do or try to do. It's just not the same to go away and not get that southern hospitality.

1. Football

LSU wasn't always my number 1 choice, but when starting my college process, having a school with a well established football program was number one on my priority list when picking a college. Texas gave me that. Football is the number one sport in Texas and I love it. Through my college process I lost sight and got sidetracked by the idea of NYC, however some how I got back on track and couldn't be happier to be going to a school with one of the best and biggest football programs.

Bob's Burgers
Adult Swim

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.
