Joe Biden was nowhere near my choice for president, and I still don't necessarily want to vote for him. I desperately wanted a true progressive candidate like Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, and Biden has a less than impressive history. That being said, I know that I have to vote for him, and I'm going to suck it up and tell you that I think you should too. Here are three reasons to vote for Joe Biden this November, and no, none of them are simply "he's better than Trump".
1. The Supreme Court
Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 87 and Stephen Breyer is 82. There is a good chance the next president will be able to nominate successors for one or both of these justices, and both are progressive. The next president will determine whether SCOTUS leans more progressive or conservative, which will determine if civil rights will be even more in jeopardy for the foreseeable future. Biden is more likely to keep the balance and nominate progressive justices.
2. A new cabinet
The current cabinet is full of people with little to no experience in their respective fields and who often work against the interests of their department (I'm talking about you, Betsy DeVos). A new president is a chance for a new cabinet that can implement actual changes and reforms to make life better while also undoing the damage caused by the current administration.
3. A chance for progressive reforms
Biden himself does not have a history of being overly progressive, but he has adopted one of the most progressive presidential platforms in history. It includes plans for climate change and improvements in education, healthcare, race relations, and more. This is at least a chance to see some progressive reforms that we desperately want and need.
