This past Friday I broke my strict rule of waiting until after Thanksgiving to listen to Christmas music. Up to then, I had been faithful this year, however, I literally could not resist the beautiful, poetic music of Leslie Odom Jr.'s new Christmas album Simply Christmas. And it was completely worth hearing the former Hamilton star sing. I enjoyed his wonderfully effortless and smooth voice crooning out Christmas classics. This amazing album combines elements of jazz and soul into a charmingly irresistible array of Christmas songs. So, even if you are like me and believe that Christmas music should be played after Thanksgiving, here are some reasons to make an exception to the rule and listen to "Simply Christmas" right now.
1. You are able to discover an entirely new side of Leslie Odom Jr. outside of Hamilton.
I adore listening to Leslie's fantastically talented voice belting out/rapping songs like "Wait For It" and "The Room Where It Happens" on the "Hamilton" soundtrack. However, with "Simply Christmas", I heard a completely different side of him. While listening to "I'll Be Home For Christmas," I was blown away by the soft gentleness of his soulful and expressive voice. He has such a versatile voice that can be used in a variety of ways, whether it is performing in Broadway's biggest blockbuster or captivating an audience with his Christmas music.
2. You get to hear his cover of "My Favorite Things.
This song has been one of my absolute favorites ever since I was a kid when I watched Julie Andrews magically sing it in "The Sound of Music". While it may not traditionally be considered a Christmas tune, Leslie Odom Jr.'s cover is still genuine and heartfelt. He is definitely creative and original by making the song his own and does not merely copy the original. With the jazz sounds of the piano and his pleasantly polished voice, the song is without a doubt my favorite on the album.
3. The music calms and relaxes you.
Songs such as "The First Noel," "The Christmas Song," "The Winter Song," "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," and "Ave Maria" are extremely soulful, reflective, and peaceful. This album will undoubtedly be my go-to study music (besides "Hamilton", of course). The serene and harmonious lyrics are tranquil yet thought-provoking and awe-inspiring. I love the fact that when things become exceedingly stressful, I can go back to my dorm room and study while listening to his soothing music (this is especially comforting since finals are right around the corner).
Even if you are the type of person who conscientiously and strictly adheres to the rule of listening to Christmas music after Thanksgiving, Leslie Odom Jr.'s album "Simply Christmas" is a marvelous musical work that provides much joy and anticipation for the Christmas season. And that makes it one of my favorite things.
