I used to try to watch romantic comedies. I was never a big fan, but there are good moments in some, and everyone else watched them, so I figured I could spare an hour and a half to see what all the fuss was about. But then To All the Boys I've Loved Before and Kissing Booth came out, and I've vowed never to watch another rom-com since. There are so many problems with them, but those can be boiled down to the three below.
They all have the same plot
There's a cute meet, but they don't want to date. Then, an unexpected situation throws them together and they start falling for each other. But, then, the main character screws up and they break up. But, finally, there's a giant declaration of love and everything is perfect again. No rom-com has a different plot.
Rom-Com romance isn't realistic
I've never known anyone who got whisked away by a tall, smart, funny, handsome, and totally in-touch with his feelings guy. Let alone the fact that the men in these movies also dedicate everything about their life to this woman, and everything they do somehow exudes romance, like making a five-course meal, or writing a beautiful love song. No normal person does any of this.
Nothing interesting happens
In action movies the whole plot is interesting. In comedies, the jokes are good. In musicals, the music is amazing. In dramas, the acting is superb. In horrors, at least they keep you on the edge of your seat. In rom-coms, there are 5 mildly funny things, followed by nothing interesting until the movie ends.
