Diwali, which is this weekend, is one of my favorite Indian holidays that celebrates the festival of lights. Not only is it celebrated by families coming together and having fun, but also it is celebrated by many groups such as Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists to remember all the events that have happened throughout the year. Within my family, we celebrate by setting up mini lamps all throughout the house. Here are three reasons why Diwali is one of my favorite holidays.
1. Setting up lights
Diwali is all about the festival of lights. Since I live in a neighborhood full of Indians who celebrate Diwali you see many lights put all around the house like in the one I mentioned in the picture above. Setting the lights up might be a little tough, but it is a lot of fun to see the beautiful outcome of glowing all the lights.
2. The Parties
Diwali is a time where many families come together and celebrate. There are many different Indian families with their own cultures and traditions, so I have been fortunate to have tried different kinds of Indian food such as palak paneer (cottage cheese with spinach), roti (flatbread) and chicken curry. Families also love to come together and play many different games such as bingo and hot potato.
3. Fireworks
During Independence Day I always go out with my family to see fireworks but I never actually get to light my own. Diwali is a different story as I get the first-hand experience to light up my own fireworks. There are many different fireworks that make the same shape and are repetitive but during Diwali families bring fireworks from India at a much less cost. Some of these fireworks blow up and make the prettiest sight with the lights in the sky that drops many people jaws in awe.
