The 3-point line first came to fruition in the NBA in 1967. Since then it has been a crucial piece to changing the game of basketball as we know it.
The adaptation of the outside shot has given the little guys on the court a better shot at scoring and being effective for their team.
As time has passed and players have really taken advantage of the extra point that it brings, it has changed the face of basketball.
The game used to consist of huge, bruising guys, destroying anyone who tried to stop them, like Shaquille O’Neal. Now it consists of sharp shooters such as Stephen Curry and Kyle Korver who have mastered the art of the 3-pointer.
This one simple line on the court has also drawn a line between fans and generations.
There are the old school fans who think that it is taking away from what basketball was really meant to be. They feel that it is taking away much of the physical aspect.
Then there is the newer generation who think that the 3-pointer is making the game more exciting and allowing a larger majority of people to play.
The truth in all honesty is that there is no right or wrong answer to the question of whether or not the 3-point line is good for the sport.
In some ways it makes the game more exciting because it is fun to see how far shooters can take their range out to. On the other hand, some shooters have come to rely solely on the outside shot and have become boring, one-dimensional players.
This debate may rage on for as long as any of us are alive, but in the end we must ask ourselves on thing: Is this one debate really enough to make us stop watching the game that has enchanted us for all this time?
