3 Life Lessons From Tyra Banks’ “We Were All Rooting for You” Speech

If you have not seen Tyra Banks’ “We Were All Rooting for You” speech, I suggest you look it up on YouTube. Nobody likes to see Tyra angry, but we sure can learn a lot from a 10-year-old video and apply it to our everyday life.

After watching it myself, I developed three different life lessons, that both Tyra and I believe to be entirely important:

1. Listen to someone’s advice (especially if it's from Tyra).

This may seem like common sense, but sometimes our emotions can get the best of us, and we might ignore some essential advice. You can learn a lot from feedback, and we should not be afraid to give or receive feedback.

If you do not think it is the right time to do so — ask the person. For instance, giving Tyra feedback on using her inside voice at this time might not be the best idea. She was clearly angry and most likely would not appreciate feedback at this time. Remember, there is a time and place for everything.

2. Do not blame someone else for your actions.

Some days it may seem like things are not going our way, but that does not mean we should take it out on someone else. We need to own up to our actions — whether they are mistakes or not.

Work harder and set goals for yourself. Just do you.

3. Learn from your mistakes.

If you get sent home from "America’s Next Top Model," and Tyra tells you she was disappointed in you, then you know you made a huge mistake. Don’t be like Tiffany. It’s not always about winning, but we need to make sure we can learn from what went wrong. Always remember, if you’re in front of Tyra, don’t express your emotions, just wait until you get out of that room.

This is all a part of adulthood — we can only get better at what we do by improving.

Sorority

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
