Racism has been a constant topic in our country today and black girl magic breaks the stereotypes that some people in society have placed upon us. It is really awesome because we are able to see strong women making differences whether it is in their community, the justice system or in the work place. Black Girl Magic was in full effect this past week. Here are a three different moments that were trending on Facebook that I thought were so inspiring.
1. Miss USA Deshauna Barber
This year's Miss USA is the beautiful Deshuana Barber, a 26-year-old Georgia native representing the District of Columbia who works as an IT Specialist for the U.S. Military. She carried herself with poise and grace. When asked to answer the question "What does it mean to be confidently beautiful"? She simply answered that it does not matter where we come from, or what we look like. Barber then goes on to further talk about how her position in the United States military has shown that beauty is truly from the inside, "being confidently beautiful is being myself and happy with who I have become." I love this because it is just so inpsiring and in today's society many struggle with the constant bombardment of what beauty is according to the media. Here we are able to understand from Barber that ultimately it is our inner beauty that is most important.
2. Zendaya
Zendaya is a 19 year old that is blazing her own and unique trail. She is most widely known for the variety of looks that she has had on the red carpet or speaking her mind against critics. She is also a Covergirl, full time actress and an activist for justice. But now she will be the first African American woman to be apart of the new Spider-Man reboot by Marvel. This is a huge step as there has been on constant call to add more diverse representation in the super hero world.
3. Chargaux
Charguex is a unique music duo in New York City. They have a new and different flair where they mix classical music with their own influences of different genres. They have had opportunities to with multiple artist such as Kendrick Lamar, School Boy Q and J. Cole. Their music has inspired many from the beginning of their first time playing together. I love their unique vibe as they are able to be themselves. Both Charlie and Marguex pride themselves on the fact they made great music on their own terms, with their own money.
As moments like these are becoming more prevalent in our society it makes me glad that are more accurate depictions of African American women. It is so great that we are able to move past what is skin deep - to be seen for our minds, intellect and unique perspectives that we are able to bring to the table.
