Long Island, rich in history, is home to a plethora of places that are considered haunted. These myths have been passed down from generation to generation. It takes a brave soul to have the nerve to explore these:
1.) Kings Park Psychiatric Center in Kings Park
This now-abandoned asylum in Kings Park opened on June 18, 1885 and closed in 1996. At its maximum, it housed 9,000 patients. Lobotomies and shock therapy were considered normal routines for them. There are many eerie underground tunnels connecting the buildings that used to be home to tortured and abused patients. If you visit today, you will see many broken windows and graffiti.
2.) Sweet Hollow Road/Mount Misery Road in Huntington/Melville
This road is home to so many myths and legends that it was even featured in books such as Weird New York: Your Travel Guide to New York’s Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets by Chris Gethard. One of the stories is that some teenagers hung themselves below the Northern State Parkway overpass, so when you drive below this overpass and honk your horn three times (or flash your lights three times), you see dead bodies hanging. To enhance this experience, it is said that if you put powder on your car and drive down this road, the ghosts will leave handprints on your car. It is also said that a hospital was located here a few centuries ago and that the souls of deranged patients haunt innocent victims, amongst many other tales.
3.) Lake Ronkonkoma in Ronkonkoma
Allegedly, Ronkonkoma was the name of a Native American princess who fell in love with a white settler, but their love was forbidden by her father. She committed suicide by drowning herself in the lake. It is said that every year, her ghost lures one male out to the lake to drown. Another story is that each year, two lovers are killed in a car accident right around this lake due to her evil spirit.
