This year at the Sundance Film Festival in Colorado there were records broken, but that does not mean all of the movies are fantastic. Here is a short list of the top films from Sundance that you should check out once they hit theaters, Redbox, or Netflix.
1. The Birth of a Nation
This movie is based on true events and follows the story of Nathaniel "Nat" Turner, an American born slave who grew up to lead the most successful slave revolt in American history. The rising star, Nate Parker, wrote, directed, and acted in this film. It broke Sundance Festival records by having its distribution rights be bought for $17.5 million by Fox Searchlight. This is definitely a film to check out.
2. Between Sea and Land
This movie follows twenty-eight year old Alberto who lives in a marsh next to the Caribbean Sea. Alberto has always dreamed of visiting the sea, but is confined to bed due to a neurological disorder. Alberto's mother lovingly cares for him. Alberto's neighbor Giselle is kind and affectionate to him, but she, as a sweetheart, is just out of reach much like the Sea. Rosa, Alberto's mother, must confront her past in order to try and make Alberto's dreams become reality.
3. Swiss Army Man
This movie follows Hank, who is stranded on an island. He has lost all hope of ever returning to the woman of his dreams when suddenly a dead body washes ashore. Accompanied by his new "friend" and an armament of tricks, Hank starts out on an epic adventure to return to the world and the woman of his dreams.
