Art is a wonderful practice that tends to elude most folks. From high brow modern art to silly doodles, most people who try drawing say they are hopeless. Honestly, as one who has been practicing art since she could hold a pencil, the secret is practice. (It really does make perfect.) For those uncertain on how/ where to start, why not start here? Have fun and enjoy!
Step one: the base
Start with a circle as the base for your head. It doesn't need to be perfect to fulfill its purpose. A trick most animators do to get perfect shapes is trace the same shape over and over until perfection reveals itself.
Step 2: Facial features
With your head complete, plan out where to put what. This is usually when I decide where the eyes, nose, mouth and ears go and sketch in the hair. If you don't like the way something looks, feel free to erase and try again. You are not always going to be happy with the first attempt and experimentation is a part of creativity's fun!
Step 3: Details
When you have are happy with the initial sketch, start filling in the details. This is usually where I start to shade in the eyes and hair and just have fun with the drawing!
Sometimes I take the detail phase further and color in the drawing, but today I was feeling simple and just stuck with the basics. Feel free to elaborate on your drawing as much or as little as your want!
(Disclaimer: At this stage in my life I cannot call myself a professional and this tutorial should in no way be treated as an official lesson. It is merely a fun way to pass the time and maybe learn something from a peer!)
