3 Big Reasons To Study Abroad

In This Article:

Studying abroad is something most college students think about, but don't always find ways to go on the trip. While it can be expensive, yes, there are ways to pay for it without breaking the bank. If you are somebody that is thinking about studying abroad, my advice is to go for it. Here is why:

It changes your perspective of the world.

Our society has a habit of being very closed-minded when it comes to other countries. All the bad and scary things you hear about other countries are not true. You learn this when you study abroad somewhere. Last summer, I went on a trip with the Media College to China. Prior to my departure, all I heard from everybody was things such as; "Aren't you afraid of being in a communist country?" "Don't get arrested, they like to take Americans." It was honestly sad all the negative things I heard when I told someone I was going to China. But literally none of that was true. When I went over there, everybody was everything but mean. They were all super nice, and so happy all the time. When you study abroad it opens your mind so much, and proves that the world is not a bad place.

It gives you more connections.

When you go abroad, you get the opportunity to meet so many people. Meeting these people gives you connections with the world. For example, on my trip, I got to meet different reporters and even talk to people that worked with CNN. These connections can do amazing things when it comes to getting a job out of college. Especially if you want to work in a field that deals with the world, or want to work internationally. You never know when you'll need one of the connections you make, so it's important to make them.

You CAN afford it.

Money is the biggest concern when it comes to studying abroad. However, what most people don't realize is that you can afford it. Most universities offer summer financial aid. Therefore, financial aid can be used to help with the expense to go abroad. You can also get scholarships for your trip. I know, when I went to China, I was awarded a scholarship to study abroad. Which helped me be able to go.

If you want to study abroad, it definitely is a life changing experience. You might as well take the opportunity while you can still get the college's help.

To The Cheerful Person On Their Rainy Days, You Are Valid

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.

April Ludgate from Parks and Recreation is notorious for her "I don't care" attitude. She speaks her mind without caring what anyone thinks of her. Fans love her because she isn't afraid to be herself. April can seem cold and negative, but she's really just fearless and strong-minded. And despite her sometimes harsh words, April truly cares about the people she's closest to. These are all reasons she is the epitome of a college student. April complains whenever she has to do any kind of work, but ends up doing the work anyway. April Ludgate is the ultimate college student spirit animal.

Life is full of twists and turns, but you have to keep going.

Life is all about twist and turns, sideways and which ways. Nothing is permanent, so we should take risks, and chase our dreams. We are taught at a young age many lessons that will follow us into adulthood. What we aren't taught is how to feel, and how we handle those emotions. We just have to figure them out ourselves, and that's not fun. In my 21 years of living, I have come to know that way too many people can't handle emotions, or the fact that not everyone is dead inside like them. When you're like me, and you have zero control over your emotions, it's hard to feel comfortable around people who aren't so in touch with themselves. As much as I would like to feel nothing at times, I've accepted who I am and the fact that I can cry over practically nothing. So, there are some things in life that you just have to do.
