26 Rules I've Learned to Live By
The Keep Calm-O-Matic

College has been a ball and with the clock winding down on my first year, I thought I'd share with you the rules that I've learned to live by in my short existence. It's not easy and people say that you can't live how you want, well I've broken those rules just a bit and came up with my own. So, 25 rules in 18 years. I could go on, but I decided not to bore you with them.

25 Rules I’ve Learned to Live By

  1. I can’t please everyone, so why bother?
  2. I need to live my life, not someone else’s version.
  3. You can’t kick a girl who’s already down, but she gets stronger every time because she keeps building herself back up.
  4. I don’t need to be better than you, I let you come to that conclusion all on your own.
  5. Life is better with friends (and wine).
  6. I may not be the pretty one, but I don’t need a man.
  7. Plan for what you want.
  8. It’s better to be alone by yourself than alone in a crowd.
  9. I can’t get where I want if I don’t do it myself.
  10. Friends come and go, but an education is forever.
  11. Laughing, even during the hard times can save you more than you know.
  12. Doing the thing that scares you most can be your saving grace.
  13. Asking for help isn’t a weakness, it’s a strength.
  14. Always head slap yourself for being stupid. If Gibbs’ can’t be there to do it for you (or bang your head on something hard).
  15. The world won’t disappear over night, live life
  16. Animals make life better
  17. Give everyone you see a smile
  18. There is only one me in life, it’d be a shame to waste
  19. Screaming your head off doesn't do anything but make you hoarse and slightly crazy, but it sure let's out some problems
  20. Live, Love, Laugh, Eat, Sleep
  21. If there is a stash of chocolate somewhere, chances are it's not your you...so DON'T TOUCH IT!
  22. Be silly, be stupid, be crazy, you won't get another chance to
  23. Carve out your own path, there's no need to follow the others.
  24. C'est la Vie
  25. When stressed, look at pictures of baby animals
  26. Carpe Diem

"I've only slept nine hours over the past four days, so I'm right on the verge of a nervous breakdown." - Leslie Knope

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
