A 26 Feet Tall Ancient Pharaoh Statue Discovered

An ancient pharaoh statue that is 26 feet tall has been discovered in a Cairo slum and is thought to be of Ramses II.

Archaeologists found this estimated 3,000-year-old statue in an area that was almost completely investigated. The German team, led by Dietrich Raue from the University of Leipzig, though that the area would be empty and so finding the statue was a great surprise.

It is believed that the statue is of the Pharaoh Ramses II, also known as Ozymandias. Not inscriptions were found to confirm this but the statue was found near a gate of the temple that was dedicated to the pharaoh which makes it a likely subject.

There is also footage of the excavation involving heavy duty machines that caused some backlash but it was confirmed that the statue has not been damaged in the process of excavation.

The head and torso of the statue will be on display in the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza opening in 2018 if you are interested in checking it out.
