There are only so many ways I can trick myself into believing that studying can be fun. In fact, I usually end up putting it off when I sit down to do it because myself I need more time to go over problems and make study sheets and flash cards and so on. Studying is exhausting, but well worth it once you see that final grade! Here’s what you should avoid thinking once you finally get around to studying:

1. I wonder if listening to hard rock would help set the mood.

2. Do I need coffee? Yes, coffee is essential.

3. (One Starbucks trip later) I need a biscuit for this coffee…

4. I should just go get food.

5. 20 minutes into work = browsing time!

6. What, only 5 minutes? It felt like longer…

7. Do my friends on Facebook know I’m alive? Should I say something?

8. This internet picture of a guinea pig is CUUUTE! Are there more like it?

9. There are actually thousands of internet guineas! Are my friends aware of this?

Well, they are now! Daw, look at him!!!!

10. I need to do other homework. I should get it out of the way and study later.

11. Rat baskets, I have a thing about half an hour from now. I should just get more homework done.

12. *Daydreaming*

13. I must get just this one problem done! I cannot possibly do any other problem till this one has been solved!

14. Whew! That one problem was exhausting! I need more coffee…

15. Biscuit…

16. Bathroom break (hopefully not TMI)! Where’s my phone!

17. Maybe I should get some snacks for my desk.

18. MUNCHCRUNCHMUNCHMUNCH CRUNCHCRACKLEMUNCHCHEWSWALLOW

19. (Panicking) The test is tomorrow and I’ve gotten nothing done!

20. I know I’ve studied this concept to death, but I should look at it one more time.

21. I want to go for a walk.

22. I should make a plan for my studying.

Well great, now I have to revise a few things on here...

23. Maybe I SHOULD procrastinate. I hear it makes you work faster.

24. I’m practically done anyway (checks email for the fifth time).

25. I realize now I didn’t study effectively for this test. I know, I’ll make a list about all the thoughts I should avoid before this next one!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
