I’ve been writing an article a week for Odyssey for about six weeks now. So far I’ve been lucky enough to have topics come to me with just a little bit of brainstorming each week, mostly based on what has been on my mind in a given week. This time I’m stuck. I Googled writing prompts, browsed the news, asked a few people and I still didn’t have a solid idea. So I Googled “what to write for my Odyssey article.” I found this gem by Alexa Lisitza. She listed 25 possible article topics for Odyssey articles so here are 25 incredibly short articles for my article this week.
1. A list of 25 topics for when you have writer’s block.
Okay, so I’m writing 24 short articles. Alexa has this one covered.
2. A list of things you’ll never do again.
I will never again:
1) Put off filling my gas tank.
I promise you, you do not want to run out of gas entirely.
2) Watch scary movies alone at night.
My imagination goes crazy and it’s just not good.
3) Board a plane without chewing gum.
My ears were not happy the last time I got on a plane.
3. 100 things to do when you’re bored.
Okay, so I don’t have 100 but I certainly have a few. I’m a huge fan of media in the video form (tv, Netflix, YouTube, etc.). Start a blog. Read a book. Color. Reorganize your furniture. I promise it’s more fun than it sounds.
4. How would you rob a bank and get away with it?
I’m not planning to ever rob a bank so I can’t say I’ve ever really thought about it but I’d probably copy something from a tv show. If I pull off the crime as a character from tv, how could anyone ever know it was me?
5. What songs are on your favorite fictional character’s playlist?
Hopeless Wanderer by Mumford & Sons
Ragged Wood by Fleet Foxes
Paris (Ooh La La) by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals
My Silver Lining by First Aid Kit
Kiss With a Fist by Florence + The Machine
I’ll let you guess the character.
6. Write a travel blog.
I’ve never left the Eastern Standard Timezone so this probably would not be very interesting.
7. Your top 10 favorite blogs.
I don’t think I read ten blogs regularly but I’ve been enjoying Boho Berry as of late.
8. Your top 10 favorite YouTube videos, stars, and channels.
Lilly Singh. Always and forever iiSuperwomanii
9. Writers you aspire to be like and why.
Are you ready for some cheesy answers? J.K. Rowling’s creativity and Shakespeare’s pure brilliance inspire me every day.
10. Respond to an editorial in the New York Times (or another popular paper).
Okay so 23 very short articles. This is outside the scope of a very short article and I would want to do something like this justice.
11. Narrate a photo and create a story behind it.
Man sleeps on cake after failed birthday party. Hopes for sweet dreams.
12. All the things wrong with your college.
Rebecca’s closes at 4 and isn’t open on weekends.
13. Free local date ideas.
If you’re in Boston, just walking around the city, window shopping and exploring is one of the most fun things you can do. Otherwise, the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company does incredible free performances of Shakespeare on the Common in the summer, the Institute of Contemporary Art is free on Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and BU’s observatory is open to the public on Wednesday nights.
14. DIY Projects.
All you need for a DIY dream catcher is a sewing hoop, some cord and some thread (beads and feathers optional). It's really fun and super easy. Plus, they make great gifts and great decorations.
15. An open letter to your hero.
And we’re down to 22 short articles. This deserves more than a few sentences in an article I wrote for the humor category.
16. A list of cheap alternatives to a popular yet expensive store.
Most of my closet consists of brand name clothes that come from Plato’s Closet. Stores like Plato’s Closet and Buffalo Exchange buy new and gently used clothes from customers and then sell them for half the retail price. They’re full of hidden gems. If you’re looking for good clothes at a decent price, try Plato’s or Buffalo Exchange. Local thrift shops can be good for fun finds too.
17. Tips you’d talk about on “girl code” or “guy code”
I had to look up what this one meant. My tip is that complimenting someone when you like their hair or their shirt or their earrings is never a waste of time.
18. Why you write.
I write because when I write I get to be me but I also get to be the complete opposite of me.
19. What your bestseller would be about.
I have some ideas about the Culper Spies. Way back during the Revolution, George Washington enlisted a ring of spies to pass him information on British movements. They communicated with newspaper messages and invisible ink and went by code names and numbers and even Washington didn’t know most of their identities. The ring stopped operating when hostilities ended but imagine if the Culper Ring had never come to an end.
20. Things you wish would be invented.
I would actually love an elevator button that lets you reselect when you press the wrong one.
21. A list of things you should never buy the generic brand of or things you don’t trust on sale.
I don’t splurge on a lot of beauty items but hair care is different. I don’t do generic shampoo but that’s a personal preference. Batteries are the one thing no one should ever buy generic.
22. The thing you are most guilty of.
This is… deep. I’m gonna go ahead and say eating way too many Oreos in one sitting.
23. What makes you an onion- the layers people don’t originally see.
Nice try. I’m not revealing any of my secrets.
24. Review the last critically acclaimed movie you saw.
Does Civil War count? Because if Civil War counts all I can say is it’s amazing and character driven and hilarious and go see it immediately.
25. What reality tv show you’d want to make.
So there was this really great docuseries about a ballet company in Colorado that was on tv four or five years ago. I want something like that about a dance studio- basically a more realistic reality show than Dance Moms. It would be about the actual drama of a dance studio, the real pressure put on dancers- not the pressure of a pyramid and a competition every weekend. I love Dance Moms because those girls are incredibly talented but I could do without the manufactured drama.
So there you go. 25 (or 22) incredibly short articles for my one, much longer article. I’m really glad I only have to write one article a week.
