25 Things Every Choir Kid Knows

There's just some things that you have to be nerdy enough to remember.

Growing up, choir was always a point of conversation in my house. Both of my parents did it all the way through high school and my dad was even in the Chamber Singers at Chico State. But once you go choir, there's no going back.

//

1. Getting new music.

2. The crazy adrenaline rush that happens when you audition for a solo.

3. Freaking out when you realize that you are supposed to be memorized TOMORROW.

4. Getting fitted for your dress. Let's be honest, they're ridiculous no matter how pretty they are.

5. The death glare you get from your director when the whole choir starts rushing her conducting.

6. That moment when a chord locks in rehearsal -- overtones everywhere. *insert heart eyes here*

7. Those moments in practice when it doesn't matter how many times you practice it, the tenors just don't come in on time. (Sorry guys, you know it's true.)

8. Remember being an alto on that song? You know the one when you sing the same note the entire time?

9. How about that time you had a guest conductor and they were just AWESOME.

10. PENCILS, PENCILS, PENCILS.

11. Remember, your pencil always remembers more than you do!

12. When you, collectively as a choir, just nailed the performance on that song that was literally the bane of your existence -- cluster chords everywhere.

13. Let's not forget singing Carol of the Bells every Winter Concert, and trying to remember if you are alto or soprano this year.

14. Okay. Gospel and spiritual songs. That is all.

15. We all know that singing in Latin makes our vowels fabulous.

16. Oh hey look, it's sight reading tests. We all know how much I love syncopation.

17. Sectionals for the win...unless that chord really is supposed to sound that way. In which case, we may need some work.

18. Newsies. All day, er'ry day.

19. Let's not jump on the risers. It's scary enough that they wobble when we walk..especially when there's 150 of us standing on them.

20. DO NOT drop the shell on your head. It hurts.

21. Everybody put away your chairs, thank you!

22. Go buy the director Nutella. Just do it.

23. And then there's recruiting...sometimes the director may bribe the freshman and tell them there's pretty girls. (Fo real. It totally happened, haha).

24. There's always those moments that make you tear up when you hear that song from sophomore year.

25. That last hug at graduation, when you sing together one last time.

//

Sometimes, when you fall in love with choir, your heart just won't forget it. It's just the little things that steal your memories away again and again so that you can't help but laugh every time you think of them.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
