You know you’re from South Central Pennsylvania when:
The good ole' 717. Where horse & buggy meets modernity. When describing where you live, there’s no way to make it make sense; “I live in the city, but not like downtown, but I also live a few houses down from a farm, but I don’t live in the country.” Going to college where no one has really heard of where we live makes it difficult to describe the 717, but as we draw close to the end of the school year, here are some glaring things you definitely remember about growing up in Central PA.
- Where eight inches of snow doesn’t even constitute a delay from school.
- Snow days?? They don't exist.
- Driving on the road is only difficult because sinkholes.
- Where "driving your tractor to school day” is an actual thing
- High school rivalry games for football were everything.
- You get an extra day off over Thanksgiving because of the first day of hunting season. (thankful for that!)
- If you live close enough, you got half-days for “free student day” at the world’s first ever fair, the York Fair Grounds!
- The York Fair offers some awesome {fried} food and awesome concerts
- Hershey Park’s outside stadium and Giant Center is where you spend all your money on concerts
- You actually can’t smell Hershey’s chocolate from where you live no matter how many people think you can
- You probably rode your first rollercoaster at Dutch Wonderland
- Or the children’s section of Hershey Park
- Passing a horse & buggy on your way to the Lancaster Outlets is totally casual
- Or you’re passing them on your way to the Amish Market because their food is BOMB!
- Actually, all of Pennsylvania’s markets are delicious. Shoutout to Pennsylvania for some good, home-cooked food.
- Philadelphia offers not only the best cheesesteaks but the best sports teams to root for.
- Unless you prefer Primanti Bros (which York finally has!) and Pittsburgh athletics.
- Where Sheetz > Wawa and Rutter’s is a top option for y’all 717’ers
- All of Central Pennsylvania was at Ocean City, Maryland for senior week
- Half of your graduating class goes to Penn State
- And if they don’t, they probably go to a branch campus
- If they do go to PSU, they always say “I go to Penn State Main”
- It's hard to understand our wine and liquor laws
- Except, does anybody really understand them??
- Everybody hates Central Pennsylvania, but are excited to come home every summer, regardless.
See you soon, Central Pennsylvania.
