Children of the 90’s listened to a variety of music that is considered reminiscent of their times. There is the 90’s rap, which had a lot of Snoop Dogg at his finest times. There was 90’s dance music, which meant a lot of Cascada and that song “Sandstorm” that could get anyone on their feet. However, the music that registers in most people's head during the late 90’s and early to mid-2000’s is the rock. This genre brings back memories of late nights and hanging out with your emotionally confused friends.
These songs bring back the most memories for many people. The songs that were so filled with anger and emotion that we would sing it out to whoever wronged us, even though we didn't know who specifically. These are the songs that many have forgotten the song and band names, yet will sing to them wholeheartedly when they hear the song itself. These are the best rock songs of our generation.
“Teenagers” by My Chemical Romance
I chose this song first because there are people out there, including me, that are still upset about this band breaking up back in 2013. This song defined our generation for a while.
~“They're gonna clean up your looks, with all the lies and the books to make a citizen out of you. Because they sleep with a gun and keep an eye on you son, so they can watch all the things you do.”
“Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana
The death of Kurt Cobain was one that rocked the rock generation to the core. His memory will always live on through those who remember his music.
~”With the lights out, it’s less dangerous. Here we are now, entertain us. I feel stupid and contagious. Here we are now, entertain us.”
“Monster” by Skillet
One the beginning of this song starts, all people of our generation want to do is just go crazy. We want to unleash that beast in each and every one of us.
~”I feel it deep within. It’s just beneath the skin. I must confess that I feel like a monster. I hate what I’ve become. The darkness has just begun. I must confess that I feel like a monster. I-I feel like a monster. I-I feel like a monster.”
“Lips of an Angel” by Hinder
This song was a love song that we all didn’t understand at first. However, after a few times of listening to it, then everyone realized that this was a song about cheating. Plot Twist!
~”Well, my girls in the next room. Sometimes I wish she was you. I guess we’ve never really moved on. It’s really good to hear your voice saying my name it sounds so sweet. Coming from the lips of an angel, hearing those words it makes me weak.”
“Kryptonite” by 3 Doors Down
This song is a reminiscent song that leaves a lot of people who listened to this stuff everyday nodding their head along with the beat and singing with a smile on their face.
~If I go crazy, then will you still call me superman? If I’m alive and well, will you be there, to hold my hand? I’ll keep you by my side with my superhuman might. Kryptonite.”
“The Reason” Hoobastank
This song hits the feels of all who have listened to it. I know every time I listen to it, tears well up in my eyes.
~I found a reason for me to change who I used to be. A reason to start over new, and the reason is you.”
“It’s Been Awhile” by Stain’d
This is one of the slower songs that had become famous in the rock realm. This is a break-up song.
~”It’s been a while since I could hold me head up high. And it’s been a while since I first saw you. It’s been a while since I could stand on my own two feet again. And it’s been a while since I could call you.”
“Blurry” by Puddle of Mudd
This is up there on my list of top reminiscent songs. I can remember listening to this song on a long ride home from anywhere with the windows down and me and my mom singing this song with such passion.
~”You could be my someone. You could be my scene. You know that I’ll protect you from all of these obscene. I wonder what you’re doing, imagine where you are. There're oceans in between us, but that’s not very far.”
“All The Small Things” by Blink-182
This song is the most relatable for now, even though it was the greatest song to jam out to when we were younger.
~”Say it ain’t so, I will not go. Turn the lights off, carry me home.”
“I Hate Everything About You” by Three Days Grace
This is the most hateful song from when we were younger, yet it is also a love song. This the most confusing song that has even existed, but I could listen to t over and over again.
~”I hate everything about you. Why do I love you?”
“Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls
The saddest song, hands down, that you will ever remember. And yes, you will remember this song for years and years to come.
~”And I don’t want to world to see me. Cause I don’t think that they’ll understand. When everything's made to be broken. I just want you to know who I am.”
“3AM” by Matchbox Twenty
This is such an upbeat rock song. Rob Thomas’s voice is like a light in the darkness. When he went solo, they were amazing albums, but the albums of this band will always have a place in my heart.
~”She says baby, it’s 3AM I must be lonely. When she said baby well I can’t help to be scared of it all sometimes and the rains gunna wash away, I believe it.”
“Chop Suey” by System of a Down
The system of a Down is a crazy band, man. They don't filter the things that they want to portray in their music, and they don't care if you like it or not. This is what makes this band so memorable. This song will make anyone headbang until their head is pounding.
~”Wake up, Grab a brush, put on a little make-up. Hide the scars to hide away the shake-up. Why’d you leave the keys up on the table? There you go, create another fable.”
“What’s My Age Again” by Blink-182
This is one of those songs that is just so stupid with no rhyme or reason to it, that you can't help but love it. You have to sing it at the top of your lungs every time it comes on the radio or on pandora.
~”And that’s about the time she walked away from me. Nobody likes you when you’re twenty-three and are still more amused by TV shows. What the heck is ADD? My friends say I should act my age. What’s my age again? What's my age again?”
“Mr. Brightside” by The Killers
This song kind of sounds more like The Gorillas, but it is still a song that everyone sang with such a passion when they were younger. I still sing it with a passion whenever I hear it.
~Jealousy, turning saints into the sea. Swimming through sick lullabies. Choking on your alibis. But it’s just the price I pay. Destiny is calling me. Open up my eager eyes. Cause I’m Mr. Bright Side.”
“Stacy’s Mom” by Fountains of Wayne
Everyone remembers this song. This song was one that everyone blasted in their car with the windows down and the wind in their hair at some point or another.
~”Stacy’s mom has got it going on. She is all I want and I have been waiting for so long. Stacy can’t you see, you’re just not the girl for me. I know it might be wrong but, I’m in love with Stacy’s mom.”
“Teenage Dirtbag” by Wheatus
This is a song that will remain in my heart forever. In fact, this is my phone ringtone to this day. A classic song about grunge love. AWWWWW!
~Cause I’m just a teenage dirtbag baby. Yeah, I’m just a teenage dirtbag baby. Listen to Iron Maiden maybe with me.”
“Beverly Hills” by Weezer
This song is one that everyone understood because Beverly Hills is where everyone wanted to be at one point in their life.
~”Beverly Hills. That’s where I want to be! Livin in Beverly Hills. Beverly Hills. Rolling like a celebrity. Livin in Beverly Hills.”
“Dirty Little Secret” by The All-American Rejects
This song is one that we all laughed and smiled while singing. Don’t lie to yourself. We all know you did it.
~”I’ll keep you, my Dirty Little Secret. Don’t tell anyone or you’ll be just another regret. My Dirty Little Secret.”
“My Sacrifice” by Creed
Scott Stapp’s voice is just so beautiful and speaks directly to the soul. It is hard to believe that after they broke up, he became homeless. His voice is just so freeing.
~”When you are with me I’m free, I’m careless, I believe. Above all the others, We’ll fly. This brings tears to my eyes. My Sacrifice.”
“How You Remind Me” by Nickelback
This is one of the first songs that Nickelback came out with and still remains to be one of the best they have ever come up with. I don't care what anyone says, I still listen to them. I don’t know when the whole fad of hating Nickelback started,
~”It’s not like you to say sorry. I was waiting on a different story. This time, I’m mistaken for handing you a heart worth breaking. I’ve been wrong. I’ve been down. Been to the bottom of every bottle. These five words in my head. Scream “Are we having fun yet?”
“Broken” by Seether ft Amy Lee
This song is slower but features two of the best singers in the harder rock section: Amy Lee (Evanescence) and Shaun Morgan (Seether). Their voices meld together in complete perfection to create a song that will be remembered for generations.
~Cause I’m broken when I’m lonesome, and I don’t feel right when you’re gone away.”
“Paradise City” by Guns and Roses
Guns and Roses are life. I don’t care who you are or where you are from. You don’t understand real headbanging until you have listened to this song, and then their song “Welcome to the Jungle” right afterward. Pure Gold.
~”Take me down to the paradise city where the grass is green and the girls are pretty. Take me home. Take me down to the paradise city where the grass is green and the girls are pretty. Oh, won’t you please take me home.”
“Dragula” by Rob Zombie
He is known as the king of creep. He is currently a movie director, but I still miss his days as a singer. He is what made Halloween for me. Him and Alice Cooper, but he is a lot of our time. His lyrics are so creepy that it is AWESOME!
“Dig through the ditches and burn through the witches and slam in the back of my Dragula.”
“Closing Time” by Semisonic
The most appropriate closing song for this list. There are so many theories as to what this song was written about, but I just like listening to it and not asking why.
~”I know who I want to take me home.”
