For the past five years of my life, I have spent at least one week each summer as a camp counselor to some extent. This can be mentally exhausting and draining, and there’s always something on a camp counselor's mind. Here are those thoughts in chronological order:
1. “I hate my alarm clock so much.”
2. “How do 10 year olds have so much energy?”
3. “Was I this crazy when I was 10?”
4. “Was I this gross when I was 10?”
5. “Yes.”
6. “Breakfast, finally, oh... Jake is putting his pancake in Steve’s water cup, I should probably stop that.”
7. “Why is there never good coffee at camps?”
8. “10:00 A.M. is an acceptable bed time right?”
9. “Hopefully I have great calves at the end of the summer.”
10. “I hope my campers shower today.”
11. “I hope I shower today.”
12. “I miss being a kid.”
13. “I’m so happy I’m not a kid anymore.”
14. “Who am I kidding, growing up blows.”
15. “Finally lunch… I’m more excited for these mini corn dogs than the campers.”
16. “I love my co-workers.”
17. “What’s that smell?”
18. “How do these kids eat two bites of food and still have energy to run to Mexico and back?”
19. “I think I like all the activities more than the kids do.”
20. “I wish I had seconds at lunch.”
21. “Found out what the smell was… it’s me.”
22. “I’m eating lunch at 4:30, how am I this hungry?”
23. “Fingers crossed for no crying tonight (me or the campers.)”
24. “Working with kids is great because I can justify going to bed at 9:00 p.m.”
25. “I have the best job in the world.”
These might not be 100 percent accurate, but they're pretty darn close. I love working at camps and I think everyone should at some point in their life. Camp Counselors unite… we are all in this together!
