24 Ways You Know You're A Choir Kid

Keep calm and sing on.

24 Ways You Know You're A Choir Kid
Julia Stein

Being a choir kid for 10 years, I have come across all of these situations. If you're a true choir kid, you have experienced at least one of these. Choir is one of the most fulfilling and most enjoyable classes, groups, or clubs you can join!

1. Being sad that you don't have the vocal range of Idina Menzel.

We've all tried to sing her songs "Take Me Or Leave Me," or "Defying Gravity," and then have frowned in response because we've let our idol down.

2. Listening to a recording of yourself and wondering why anyone ever let you sing.

Pretty sure we all refuse to have ourselves recorded for this reason!

3. Getting stuck next to the tone deaf kid in class.

And still having to hold your own note with confidence.

4. Being healthy all year, then performance night comes and *POOF* voice gone.

You must've done something to upset the Choir Gods. We have all been there.

5. Sopranos overpowering the whole group.

The sopranos just don't care, we will continue to sing loudly, and there is NOTHING you can do about it.

6. "Let's sight read!"

Easily the three most terrifying words known to choir kids. You thought you knew your music until now.

7. "This is the last time!" is never actually the last time...

No matter how beautiful or perfect you sounded, there are always flaws.

8. When your whole section disappears and you have to hold your own.

Suddenly you become less loud version of yourself, but still have all the right notes. Go you!

9. Pulling the weight for those who lip sync.

You are what keeps this section together, you are the staple in my music.

10. Always having the urge to sing. Always.

In the shower, the car, the bathroom, walking down the street, in class, randomly in the middle of conversations. You name it, we've probably had the urge.

11. Singing songs regardless if you can hit the high or low notes.

I will sound like Beyoncé, even if I can't hit the notes. Deal with it.

12. Hoping no one noticed your voice crack.

One of the most embarrassing things.

13. Your constant rivalry with that one person in rehearsal.

Let's play "Who can sing the loudest."

14. That one person that thinks you're showing off because your vocal range is above theirs.

It's not my fault that I was blessed by the Choir Gods with a higher vocal range.

15. Not having a "mainstream" sound to sing most songs.

Being so used to singing Brahms or Whitacre, but not having the ability to sing Adele...

16. Sounding like a dying cat when attempting to sing high notes.

Sometimes its just not going to happen, you'll most likely sound like a dying animal.

17. Judging the people who don't take choir seriously.

Choir is our life, just because it's not yours, doesn't mean you can just fool around.

18. Belting and yelling are not the same thing.

Seriously, I can't remember how many times I've explained this.

19. Realizing how nervous you actually are before performances.

I hate the last minute performance jitters!

20. When other sections use "loud sopranos" as an excuse for them not knowing their part.

You all never knew your parts, don't blame it on the sopranos.

21. Director favorites.

The director ALWAYS has a favorite, maybe a select few. You'll know who these few are, and you'll be very jealous if you aren't one.

22. When the second sopranos are treated like they're unskilled first sopranos.

Second sopranos are just as skilled, if not more skilled than first sopranos. They just sing a little lower.

23. Never getting perfect harmony.

It's just something we all crave. And it NEVER happens!

24. Having your warm ups stuck in your head...forever.

Six years after your last choir class you'll still hear the warm ups in your head.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
