If you're anything like me, you tried to choose a college that was a good distance from home--not so close that it feels like you've barely left, but not so far away that it takes almost a day's worth of driving to get back. For me, that makes my drive about three hours long--a number that didn't seem so bad at first glance. However, if you go home frequently enough (which I'm definitely guilty of doing), the drive that you thought would be a piece of cake turns into one of the things you dread the most. Here are twenty thoughts that I have every time I embark on the long drive home.

1. It's the moment I've been dreading: the drive home. I don't know if I can handle the ensuing boredom and the fight against sleep. Will I even make it out alive? Come on, get it together and go.

2. *Within the first five minutes* Hey, you know what, this isn't so bad. Actually, having some alone time to sing to music is pretty nice.

3. I hate stopping for gas before I leave town. Why must my car use so much gas?

4. Okay, gas is in the tank, let's go.

5. I'm not even two minutes out of town, and there's already construction. Why is there always construction?

6. Oh, thank God, the construction is finally done. That's ten minutes of my life I'll never get back.

7.Why must the radio play the same songs over, and over, and over? I have a long drive, people; mix it up.

8. Why is this car speeding up when I'm trying to pass them? You want to race, buddy? It's on.

9. Fine, fine you can stay in front of me; I'm not getting a ticket because of you.

10. It's about time the radio played a good song. *Cranks up the radio and proceeds to sing and dance like there's no tomorrow*

11. Okay, it's been an hour. Can I be done driving now?

12. Aww, the car I've been driving beside for the past hour and a half just took an exit and abandoned me. I thought we were in this together. Farewell, friend.

13. Oh, great, the tiredness is kicking in.

14. Oh, God, this is getting bad; I'm going to fall asleep and die. This is the end of me as we know it.

15. Maybe if I crank up the air conditioning and the radio I'll wake up?

16. Well, now I'm tired and freezing. Fantastic.

17. I need to start waking up. *Proceeds to bounce around in seat, sing, and make funny faces in the mirror*

18. I'll just pretend like any of that actually helped.

19. Why didn't I stop at the rest stop a few miles back? I hate myself.

20. I also hate that the speed limit keeps going down as I get closer to home. It feels like I'm crawling.

21. I should invent a teleportation device. That would be amazing.

22. Okay only an hour left to go, I'm making progress.

23. I'm finally passing all the towns close to my house! This drive is drawing to an end!

24. I finally made it. It's good to be home.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
