Freshmen year of college is a very difficult time for most people. It's a transitional phase between childhood and adulthood. You go from being at the top of the food chain to the very bottom of the pecking order in a matter of months. Some of the experiences you have will be wonderful and some will make you call home in tears. It can be a lot to handle, but in the end it's an experience that you wouldn't trade for the world. Here's a list of 23 Freshman experiences as told by Harry Potter.
1. Move-in day
There's something distinctly magical about when you first step foot on campus as a student. However, the magic quickly fades when you see the size of the dorm room you're expected to live in for the next year of your life...
2. When you meet your roommate
Everyone goes into their freshman year assuming that their roommate will become their best friend and that someday, when you're giving a toast at their wedding, you'll recall all of the good times you had in the prison cell-like dorm you cohabited. Some of us are lucky, but for most people this isn't the case.
3. All the free stuff
Orientation is basically just a lot of ice breakers and free t-shirts.
4. Getting in your first fight with your roommate
Sharing a confined space with someone can be really difficult, even if they are your best friend. Chances are at some point or another shit will hit the fan.
5. Homesickness
No matter how much you love your school or how often you FaceTime your parents, you're still going to get homesick. Whether you live ten minutes away or ten hours away, getting through the day without your mom can be really hard.
6. Attending your first class
No matter how many AP or IB classes you took in high school, nothing can prepare you for the workload in a college class. For the first few weeks you'll feel like you're drowning, but it gets better. Kind of.
7. When people call you "freshman" instead of your actual name
You're finally a college kid, but all of the upperclassmen are convinced you still sleep with a night light.
8. Frat Boys
They're a completely different breed than anything you dealt with in high school. Sometimes you'll love them, most of the time you'll hate them, but you know college wouldn't be the same without them.
9. Your first college party
10. The freshman fifteen
Don't be fooled - the freshman fifteen is a very real thing. Be wary of cafeterias with soft-serve ice cream.
11. "It's in the syllabus"
If I had found it in the syllabus do you think I would be asking?
12. Midterms
Also known as "the week spent wandering between your dorm and the library, only stopping to eat and pee."
13. Waiting for your Professor to post your Midterm grades
With the withdrawal deadline fast approaching, you need to know if there's any coming back from the first semester you spent partying instead of studying.
14. When the grade is finally posted and you aced it
I would like to thank not only God, but also Jesus.
15. When the spring semester rolls around and all your friends start new relationships
You might as well be majoring in third-wheeling.
16. Engagement Season
Suddenly your Facebook feeds is full of pictures of happy couples and engagement rings. "Ring by spring" is a very serious epidemic.
17. Existential Crisis
It happens to all of us, sometimes more than once. You question why you ever decided to attend college just to accrue four years of debt and spend a lot of hours crying into your pillow. Cheer up buttercup, it gets better.
18. Lots and lots of crying
Crying is not reserved for the aforementioned existential crisis, you will do it in your dorm room, the bathroom, your car, your friend's car, in class, on the way to class, and in your advisors office, just to name a few.
19. Trying to get your life together before finals
One day you wake up and have two ten-page papers, three tests, and one presentation all due within a week.
20. Giving up on trying to get your life together before finals
Maybe by the time you're a senior you'll have all your ducks in a row. Maybe.
21. Finishing your last final
Sweet, sweet freedom.
22. Being ready for Sophomore to start before Freshmen year is even officially over
Your school becomes your home away from home and you almost don't want to spend three months away from it. Almost.
23. Giving advice to the new incoming freshmen
Finally, someone lower on the totem pole than you.
