23 Things That Will Make You Smile

Especially when you're having a tough day.

We all have those days where we just feel off. Maybe you have a lot of homework or you miss somebody that you haven't talked to in a while. But sometimes the bad days just come on for no reason. Here are some things that make almost everybody smile.

1. Live puppy cams

Whether it's http://explore.org/live-cams/player/service-puppy-... or http://www.ustream.tv/sfshiba or even some random one that you found on Google, these adorable little guys will make your heart melt.

2. Throwback songs

Spotify has some of the best throwback playlists and even if you can't find the one for you, make your own! Throw on some Cheetah Girls, old Britney Spears, or maybe some R&B Usher style and it's pretty much guaranteed to make you start dancing.

3. Baking

For those who aren't the most skilled in the culinary arts department (me), baking brownies or cookies is the perfect way to satisfy your tummy along with boosting your self confidence. YOU made those brownies that are making your entire apartment smell like your little corner of chocolate heaven!

4. Home videos

There's nothing quite like watching yourself boss everyone else around at 3 years old. You'll probably be surprised by how much you actually remember too.

5. Complimenting someone

Seeing someone smile because of something you just said to them makes you smile too - it's contagious!

6. Hugging your best friend

None of that one-armed, side hug stuff! I'm talking about a two-armed, chest-to-chest type of hug. Even if you're not usually a hugger, this could really help. There's just something about feeling someone squeeze you tight that forces you to smile.

7. Rewatching your favorite movie

And reciting every line while you're at it, who cares!

8. Sitting outside

Nowadays, we are so wrapped up in technology that we forget to look around and really see how beautiful our surroundings are. Take some time to simply sit outside, without a phone or laptop, and just listen. It puts things into perspective and makes you realize some things that you think are important, are really not.

9. Rearranging furniture

Maybe you feel bored of the same setup that you've had for years and it's time to switch things up. Plus, you'll feel accomplished after you finish.

10. Coloring

I personally cannot draw, but I love to color inside the lines. This might not be relaxing for some, but maybe it'll make you smile once you see how great it turns out.

11. Old photos

They may be super cringe-worthy, but those embarrassing middle school photos come in handy when you need a good laugh.

12. A Hand-Written Letter

Write one to someone and ask them to write one back, you'll smile as soon as you see it in the mailbox!

13. An Organized Desk/Room/Closet

Take some time to throw out stuff you've been hoarding, you'll be glad you did once you see how clean everything looks.

14. Driving

I know this one isn't the most environmentally friendly, but for some people, taking a long drive in the middle of nowhere helps them to relax. Grab some friends, put on that throwback playlist, and drive for a little while.

15. A Bath

If you're lucky enough to have a bath (basically, if you live at home and not in a dorm), filling it up with hot water (and maybe throwing a bath bomb in there), can really calm you and your nerves.

16. Gardening

This is a bit of a messier one since you'll be working with dirt, but once the task is complete and the front of your house looks beautiful, you'll thank yourself and feel awesome.

17. Decorating

When life gets too busy, we often forget about the pictures or inspiration quotes we want to hang up around the house. Try to finish a room or two, they'll feel more complete.

18. Reading a Good Book

Or rereading your favorite. There's just something about books that movies will never be able to capture.

19. Getting a Good Night's Sleep

Too often we feel exhausted when we wake up, so try to go to bed an hour earlier than usual. It may feel weird, but in the morning, you'll feel better than ever - and you won't have such a hard time getting up and starting the day on the right foot!

20. A Haircut

Even if it's just a trim, or maybe you really do want something completely different, your hair will feel healthier and so will you.

21. Finishing Your Homework (on time)

Or a paper. Or a big project. Or really anything that needs accomplishing. When you've put a lot of effort into something and it's finally done, you can't help but smile and take a deep breath.

22. Sunrises/Sunsets

Seeing nature at work, even if it's just through a picture, is incredible. Even if it doesn't make you smile, it'll put you at ease.

23. Other Happy People

Maybe it's an older couple holding hands or a child playing with their favorite toy, but any happiness is happiness worth noticing. Surrounding yourself with positive people will make your life more positive too!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
