Before I begin, let me explain that this article was originally going to be a comparison of Kylie Cosmetic Matte Lipsticks to Colourpop Matte/Ultra Matte Lipsticks; however, I ordered from Kylie Cosmetics right before they announced a restock, so I’m SOL for a few more days! In its place, I present to you: A Swatch and Catalogue of the 21 Colourpop lip products I own (I actually own 24, but they’re doubles). Let the swatching begin!
1. Matte Lippie Stix
From top to bottom, those are the colors Lumiere, Tootsi, Grunge and Chi Chi. They all come from the same line of Lippie Stix (how cute that they gave their lipstick their own name!). Now, I will take this time to review each one.
Primer (not pictured): The primer Lippie is basically a clear base coat that goes on before your lip liners. It kind of moisturizes and smooths out the lines of your lips (but not completely, because I’ve got some damn wrinkly lips as you’ll soon see). I love it though! It smells like vanilla (most of Colourpop’s lip products do) and it makes taking off the makeup a bajillion times easier (because it’s a buffer for staining).
Lumiere: Lumiere is a beautiful dusty mauve (not pink, like the website says) Lippie baby that was born of a collaboration with YouTube beauty blogger Kathleen Lights. She has several beautiful pieces on the website, but I’m pretty sure this is the only one I have from her collection. Anywho, Just as all the Matte Lippie Stix, this baby is HIGHLY pigmented and glides on smoothly. Pro Tip: This is not for kissing or eating… much. You can get away with it without reapplying in small doses, but mack sessions and burgers will not be your friend in this (mostly because you end up wiping your mouth with a napkin when eating, not because it won’t stay from grubbin’ down).
Tootsi: The Lippie so good, I bought it twice. I am totally a brown girl (as you’ll soon see) when it comes to makeup, and this was part of my first purchase (along with Lumiere, the Primer and a liquid lipstick called Trap) It is a beautiful light brown color. The website shows it as an ashy grey-pink, but it’s more of an ashy brown — and I was in love!
Chi Chi: Well, it’s supposed to be inspired by Chi Town, or Chicago, but I’ve never been there, so I don’t really know why it’s a bright neon red-orange. It’s absolutely beautiful though. I bought it to step out of my comfort zone (but it kind of makes my coffee-stained teeth look 10x more yellow).
In the end, all of the Matte Lippie Stix here have my seal of approval.
Ultra Matte Liquid Lippies.
OK, full disclosure, almost all of the Ultra Mattes are incredible, kiss-proof (much to my boyfriend’s enjoyment — he’s always afraid I’ll get my lipstick on him) and munchie-proof, but VERY drying. The only one I own that doesn’t do this at all is Viper.
Without further ado, from top to bottom is:
Trap: This is my all-time favorite Colourpop purchase. On my last order, I bought a replacement because SURPRISE! These lipsticks do indeed have an expiration date. They last about a year and a half, from what I’ve noticed. It’s about then that the formula starts changing. In my case, Trap would flake off like nobody’s business! Moving on, this Ultra Matte lip is a fantastic shade of brown! (Pictured below)
NOTE: Look at my picture for color reference, because the one on their page is very different from what it actually looks like! Needless to say, me loving the color was a happy accident. Also, notice how it makes lines on my lips (Lip scrub is your BFF).
Littlestitious: A very pretty pink! Kind of a dusty rose. Great for all skin tones! And it’s such a great color for year-round!
Bad Habit: Hell. Yes. The one habit you won’t want to kick. This dark berry wine-ish red is TDF (to die for). I’m kind of a weirdo, and I reverse season-appropriate colors, so I tend to wear this dark red from summer to fall rather than fall to winter. Anyway, for the past three years, I’ve been wearing Bad Habit to Fourth of July picnics, barbecues, and parties!
Creeper: The Holy Grail of true blue-red lip colors. You know when you go to a salon or store and you pick out a red nail polish, only to find out it’s actually a pink-y magenta? Well, not today, babay. This is the real deal, and my go-to for Pin-Up inspired outfits and holiday parties.
Viper: This is the one I’ve been waiting to tell you guys about. I just got it two days ago, and I’m in love (so is my boyfriend). The finish on this is Ultra Matte, but it doesn’t feel dry! It makes your lips feel just like your lips! Also, it’s this gorgeous true dusty rose, and I can promise you that the example photo on the website is SPOT-ON! I love love love it! (Pictured below.)
Mamacita: PROCEED WITH CAUTION: This stains your lips like a mo-fo! So, I definitely recommend the primer and the lippie pencil (lip liner) to be applied. Do not go commando with this color! However, this is the dang sexiest purple-red I’ve ever seen. Aye-yiye-aye! Also, this is a love-child born from the collaboration of ILUVSARAHII and Colourpop <3
Oh! And Mamacita is also a perfect example of why it's good to look at swatches or something before you buy because the color looks different in the lip tube. (Please overlook my unkempt nails.)
Ultra Satin Liquid Lipsticks.
Ultra Satins are one step down from the ultra mattes. They’re very pigmented, but they don’t have a drying effect (so no kissy kissy or munchy munchy, mes amis). But if you get over the fact that you can't kiss your SO, and you can’t come out of a double cheeseburger unscathed, they’re THE BEST. And mostly for the exact reason you can’t do those two things. Because it doesn’t have a drying effect, Ultra Satins leave your lips feeling very moisturized (and not sticky like dreaded lip gloss *shudder*)
So, from top to bottom:
Calypso: I release you from your human bonds… This dark, dusty orange is amaze-balls! From what I’ve heard, it might be in the same ballpark as the Kylie Cosmetic Ultra Matte in Pumpkin, but obvi Colourpop had it first (I’m not hating on Kylie, but she and her cosmetics team did get in big trouble for using Colourpop’s formula). Anywho, the starfish will love you, and the sea will sing your praises because this color is going to make you look hot AF. (Pictured below.)
(Side note: This probably isn't the best photo to show for a great example of Calypso in all its glory. My swatch photo above captures the color perfectly. In this one, I just came off of a 6-hour shift at a pizza shop, ate some food, and was smooching my pooch. Carry on.)
Molly: You don’t do drugs. You are drugs. Molly is a bright medium lilac color that would pair well with any outfit on its way to an EDM music festival.
Femme: More like Femme Fatale. This is a dark muted lilac (so, like with a gray tinge). The photo on Colourpop’s website is pretty accurate for what it looks like. However, the little padding that runs the color over my lips has a poky part, so I need to look into that.
Ultra Metallic Liquid Lipsticks.
So, if I could buy them all, I would, but I know that I already barely wear the two I have (they are wonderful though). Basically, they’re shimmery wonderful lipsticks.
Man Eater: A coppery rose gold. It’s so beautiful, but I hardly have occasion to wear it.
3 Way: A beautiful purple. (Pictured below. But also keep in mind that in this photo, I just ate a hot dog and got a lipstick stain on my brand new $40 Frank Iero and the Patience shirt.)
OK, so I’m not being paid or sponsored (Colourpop, HMU) to do any of this, I just love the brand.
Liquid lipsticks are $6, Lippie Stix and Lippie Pencils are $5 (they have way more than lipsticks) and even their ultra-highly pigmented eyeshadows are inexpensive! I recommend this company not only because you’re getting a better product for a fifth of the price of some competitors, but you’re also supporting a company that is 100% made in the U.S.A. (and as a daughter of a union member, that is very very important).
