Its no secret that families have their issues. Things happen, tables turn, people get mad, others grow sad, while the rest become drained. Christmas Eve was when my Polish side of the family was once a house-full of loud, drunk, humorous, endless love. The presents under the tree spilled out into the entire living room, leaving no room for anyone to sit. While materialism isn’t what Christmas is ultimately about, it just goes to show how family filled this holiday was throughout my life.
However, this past Christmas Eve went from 60 people to 15. There were five presents under the tree. Traditions were forgotten because family was blatantly absent. It was in that moment after sitting around the table with my parents, aunt, and cousin for three hours waiting for family that never arrived, that Christmas is about family. Its about having the children together. Its about growing and accepting each other. As bad as life gets, no matter how many friends leave, or how many significant others leave you with a broken heart, family is forever and they should have your back for life.
There are certain relatives I only see at Christmas time. This is when I get the chance to catch up with them, see how life is going, and talk about the future as well as reminisce about the past. Its crazy how things can change over a year, but its even crazier how selfish some can be. Christmas should be time to look past any differences and appreciate this time spent with the ones who matter most.
As a 21 year old, I didn’t ask for anything for Christmas. I don’t need anything. At this age I’ve learned that time on Earth is limited. It is important to value your time with loved ones as much as you can. I opened my eyes Christmas morning appreciative of the fact that I am here on this Earth surrounded by people who love and support me. I got out of bed and walked into the living room where I was greeted by my parents, dog, and a homemade breakfast.
Christmas isn’t about presents. Its not about materialistic needs. Its about love. Its about growth. Its about reflecting on the past year and appreciating the life you live. Its about valuing relationships in your life. Sadly, many people now a days tend to let their selfishness get the best of them and forget what the holiday season is all about.
