21 Thoughts on Certain College Courses as an Animal Science Major
Department of Animal Science - Iowa State University

Majoring in Animal Science can bring out quite a few mixed emotions in everyone. You learn which 200 level classes are the hardest, what teachers absolutely don't allow phones out and which humanities course will make your class load less stressful.

Half of the time you start to wonder why you chose Animal Science as a major because of all of the science courses. The other half of Animal Science you spend enjoying getting your hands dirty during the labs, in the end making Animal Science one of the best majors.

1. Microbiology 201

When you learn that you only get graded on quizzes and tests in lab.

2. AnS 226

When you find out you and your roommate (who has a beef background) are in the same class and expect it to be easy.

When you realize you both know absolutely nothing.

3. AnS 114

When the class is interesting but it's at 8am and you aren't a morning person.

4. Biology 211

Contemplating whether or not to switch your major because you realize that not only do you have lectures about three times a week, but there's also a three hour lab.

5. Biology 211 Lab

Being a freshman taking this course and getting stuck with that 7am lab.

6. Biology 212

Silently praying that your group doesn't get called on by Kukday to talk in front of the entire class of about 200 people.

7. Chemistry 177

Thoughts throughout lecture and recitation.

8. Chemistry 177 Lab

When you walk out on the last day of lab knowing you didn't fail.

9. Econ 101

Going through Aplia's homework.

10. AnS 225

When you finally get an A in college.

11. AnS 101

Feelings on having to know about every species.

12. AnS 110

Sitting in 110 lectures knowing the class is easy, but questioning why you need to go every week.

13. AnS 190

When you finally get the hands-on experience that you've been dying to do.

14. HDFS 276

When you thought taking human sexuality with your best friend was a good decision but realize you're both immature after spending every class giggling at every "dirty" word the professor says.

15. Philosophy

When you're expecting this class to be an easy A for humanities, but end up questioning your every thought.

16. AnS 214

When Selsby catches someone on their phone.

17. AnS 211

When you're obviously hard at work making your two tweets and finding an article about the Ag industry, definitely not on Snapchat, Instagram, or Facebook.

18. Stats 101

Being honest about the amount of attention you have during class.

19. Stats 101 Lab

When the worksheet asks you to explain why you got a certain answer, even though you clearly got the numbers from the chart given.

20. BBMB 221

Not knowing how to take notes with your instructor but still attempting to pay attention.

21. Ag Eds 310

Realizing on the first day after everyone introducing themselves that only two out of about eighteen people are animal science majors.

Saying you're an animal science major to learn about agriculture but actually hoping you marry someone that wants to live in a small town or on a farm.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.

For many undergraduates across the nation, the home stretch has begun. Only one more semester remains in our undergraduate career. Oh, the places we will go! For the majority of college seniors, this is simultaneously the best and worst year out of the past four and here’s why.

1. The classes you are taking are actually difficult.

A schedule full of easy pottery throwing and film courses is merely a myth on the average campus. With all of those prerequisites for the upper-level courses and the never-ending battle you fight each year during registration for limited class seats, senior year brings with it the ability to register for the final courses you need to fulfill your major. Yet, these are not the easy entry level courses. These are the comprehensive, end of major, capstone courses designed to apply the knowledge from all your previous courses, usually in the form of an extensive research paper or engaged learning project. The upside is you actually probably really enjoy these classes but alas there is no room for slackers here.
