22 Things You'll Miss About Baker Over The Summer

We all have the countdown on our phones.

Baker University

By now we’re a little less than halfway until we have the privilege to head back to Baldwin City. So far, you have received a few homemade meals from mom and dad, caught up on your sleep and made enough money to be a little less of a broke college student.

I’ve slowly learned that college is a little different than high school. Now, you dread the summers and wish the school year would slow down. Your hometown isn’t your hometown anymore, and a big piece of your heart belongs to the town your college resides because that’s where your family away from family is. As much as freshman year is a little shaky and has its hardships, when you go home each summer, you’ll miss ole BU.

1. You’ll miss saying hello to random people, and you’ll miss the smiles someone gives you on your way to class because no one is as friendly as the students in Baldwin City.

2. You’ll miss recognizing everyone you see.

3. You’ll miss hanging up a hammock and relaxing your way through the day.

4. You’ll miss being able to run down the hall or across campus to tell your friends the details about last night that only they would want to hear.

5. You’ll miss heading down to El Patron after a long day to enjoy some chips and queso, while getting your fix on cheap margaritas.

6. If you’re anything like me, you live in a big city so you’ll miss the one stoplight in town because rush hour traffic sucks.

7. You'll miss seeing President Lynne Murray walking around campus with her perfect dogs.

8. Despite the subpar food, you’ll miss seeing everyone you know and love in the caf and having family dinners with your closest friends.

9. You’ll miss befriending all the estranged cats throughout the town and dragging them into your room to be your pets.

10. You’ll miss being independent.

11. You’ll even miss driving 20 minutes to get your favorite Pizza Shuttle pizza because nothing beats that $5 deal.

12. You’ll miss mixers, date parties and frat houses.

13. You’ll miss cheering on every team on campus, especially football.

14. You’ll miss The Diner’s crappy service because that’s your only cure on a Sunday morning.

15. You won’t admit it, but you’ll miss going to class because your professors are complete rock stars.

16. You’ll miss Jitters, Moose’s BBQ and especially the Kwik, because that’s your only source of food after 10 p.m.

17. You’ll secretly miss chapter.

18. You’ll miss counting all the squirrels on your way to class.

19. You’ll miss heading to Sylas & Maddy’s on Tuesday night to get BOGO ice cream.

20. You won’t have Mass Street 15 minutes away to be indecisive about what to eat with your friends.

21. You have three months where you don’t get to walk through a field of beautiful maple leaf trees on your way to class.

22. You’ll miss your friends, chapter, teammates and most of all you’ll miss Baker because for four years and for life, it’s home.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
