21 Things You Need To Do (If You Want)

For a school year filled with twenty-fun, here's twenty-one things you should be doing- no matter how old you are. Take my advice, or don't. Whatever.

Indian summer has arrived, referring to the crunching of summer leaves beginning to fall and fresh notebooks if you're headed back to school. The majority of days spent prior to the beginning of the academic year are a lot like sun burnt New Year's Eve parties- too much champagne, and filled with people all excited for a shift in calendar. Luckily, my birthday also falls in this period of transition, so I get to kill two resolution lists with one huge stone. Turning twenty-one doesn't just mean the best thing ever (I'm the best zodiac sign - Virgo) - it means I have twenty-fun resolutions for you to adopt too, regardless of age. Aren't we all forever 21, anyways?

1. Ask for what you want

No matter what it is. I can confirm - this is how you get what you want.

2. Rid of material possessions

I have too much shit. You have too much shit. Together, let's get rid of our shit.

3. When complimented, say "thank you"

Also, say "I love you" back. Possibly break #14 if you want. Can't win 'em all.

4. Wake up earlier

Or don't. Sleep whenever you want.

5. If given an opportunity, take it

6. Document the adventure

However you prefer, whichever adventure you prefer. You'll be happy you did.

7. Make your surroundings inspirational

Can be achieved by finding a companion in a cat.

8. Empathize

9. Learn a new fact daily

A mosquito has 47 teeth. The Chinese invented the magnetic compass. I could keep going.

10. Notice the power of words

11. Save fortunes from Chinese food

12. Laugh about it instead

Tragedy is hilarious. Think about it.

13. Listen to new music

14. Tell the truth

15. Hand-write 'Thank You' notes

16. Forgive your past self

17. Buy gifts, just because

18. Celebrate holidays with cheer

Or celebrate holidays with beer. Close enough.

19. Date yourself

Often. Somebody's got to.

20. Pop vitamins

Can't hurt.

21. Make lists

When things are too messy in your head. Or don't. Do what you want.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
