21 Things To Do Before Graduating From Radford University

For many of us, it's our final year here at Radford University. For many others, their adventure is just beginning.

Here are 21 things to do before walking across that stage to receive your diploma.

1) Eat at Muse for dinner.

It's expensive, it's a long wait, but it's worth it and makes you feel classy af.

2) Go out to a snow keg.

Snow kegs are the best kind of days, because they occur on days that school gets cancelled due to severe weather. There's something magical about being drunk and binging on Quick Way pizza at 3:00 on a Monday when you should be in Geology class.

3) Sled down COBE (bleh "Kyle Hall") Hill.

It's tall and yes, people do get hurt but it's so much fun that you won't even notice that your arm has been dislocated. Especially if you hit up the snow kegs first.

4) Pull an all-nighter in Young during finals.

It's actually insanely fun to stay up in Young Hall all night amongst other procrastinators cramming for their finals. You tend to inadvertently become best friend with your classmates as you battle it out for the last empty classroom and bond over not knowing anything.

5) Party.

We have the stigma of being a party school whether we want it or not so as long as your homework is done, get your ass on light side and get sloppy for a night. No regrets.

6) Go to the "townie"/ dive bars.

Screamers fam for life. Once you're 21, of course. The drinks are cheap, entertainment is good, and food is amazing.

7) Make friends with your professors at Sharkey's.

If Sharkey's isn't for buying your professors shots, then I don't know what is.

8) Go to a sporting event.

It seems like a long hike down to Dedmon for a basketball game or what have you, but the school spirit is contagious.

9) Go to the concerts.

The concerts are here and they're cheap or even better, free. Why would you NOT take advantage of that?

10) Join a club.

Clubs might sound dorky, but you'll make so many great friends and connections. College isn't all about drinking, you know.

11) Go above the third floor of the library.

Our library has more than just the main computer lab. Go explore.

12) Go to Sharkey's on trivia night, game night, bingo night, etc.

Another great way to make friends and have a good time. Just don't get too crazy with the mixed drinks because these fun festivities occur on week nights.

13) Skip class to hang out on the Quad.

I don't condone missing classes, but professors pretty much expect you to skip one here or there for no good reason. Might as well take advantage of the beautiful spring weather and sun tan. Note: Tanning is so much more fun when you feel like a badass for being outside while your class is stuck in a dark room watching a PowerPoint about the French Revolution.

14) Bar crawl in Blacksburg.

Just because we aren't Virginia Tech students, doesn't mean we can't party like them. Make sure you have a DD coming back.

15) Go to Cook Out at 3 a.m.

Every Radford student's favorite drunk munchies is 3 a.m. Cook Out. Get a sober friend to drive you to the holy Mecca of styrofoam boxes full of late night burgers, quesodillas, and onion rings. *dies happy*

16) Go to Benny's.

Not sure why I have to say this, but the amount of upperclassmen who have never found themselves in Benny's late on a Friday night is appalling. It's giant ass pizza. get a clue.

17) Spend one summer here.

Or at least one month of summer. There's something to be said about the endless day drinking fest.

18) Go bowling.

Bowling. In the Bonnie. With your friends. Cheap. Fun. Entertainment.

19) Play pool.

Once again, it's a great time.

20) Hang out in Starbucks

Write a screenplay, do some homework, I don't know. Our Starbucks is damn serene compared to the one's in the real world so take advantage while you can. The music is bomb and the coffee will keep you going. Plus our new Starbucks is gorgeous with ample seating.

21) Go outdoors.

There are lots of places for hiking, camping, and tubing around the area. You can rent gear from RU Outdoors for dirt cheap and go away for an amazing weekend with friends.

So there you have it. Radford University is first and foremost a place for learning, but during your down time there are so many great ways to keep entertained in this little town. Go have some fun!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
