21 Things That Describe A Puerto Rican

North American that reads this: you probably don't know a lot about Puerto Rico, only that we are the land of Daddy Yankee, the artist behind "La Gasolina" and Ricky Martin.

But did you know we have been a U.S territory since 1898? And that we are a part of the Caribbean?

Now, here I'm going to talk a little about my people, 21 things that describe a Puerto Rican.

1. Puerto Ricans are proud of their flag. We show our flag everywhere and to everyone.

2. Music is in our veins. Bomba, salsa, merengue, bachata, reggaeton, you name it. We could even dance to the elevator music if they let us.

3. Christmas is our BIGGEST celebration (we do make everything into a celebration).Instead of Christmas Carols we have something called "Parrandas", I consider them as Christmas Carols in steroids, lots of music and singing.

Christmas celebration does not stop here, January 6, which is the Three Kings.

Our closing Christmas event are "Fiestas de La Calle San Sebastian" or how we call it "Las Calles". It always falls on the third week of January and runs from Thursday to Sunday celebrated in the capital San Juan.

4. We love our sports. Boxing and baseball are our biggest sports. You all probably know Roberto Clemente and Javier Baéz one of the infielder for the Chicago Cubs. Carlos Correa who was drafted first overall by the Astros in 2012 won 2015 Rookie of the Year.

Puerto Ricans are also great at Boxing. Miguel Cotto and Tito Trinidad are our most well known.

5. Plantains are a Puerto Rican's biggest weakness. Tostones, mofongo, amarillos, canoas, and the list goes on. No, our food is not the same as Mexican food.

6. Yes, we all look different. Curly or straight hair, black or white, tanned, blue-eyed, brown-eyed, green-eyed, we are all unique.

My sister, niece and me.

7. ADOBO. All Puerto Ricans use this unique "spice" in all our cuisine. I recommend you to get some at Wal-Mart, yes they do have it in the States.

8. Are you sick? Vicks is the solution just a little in your nose, chest, even on your feet and then put on socks, you will be good in no time. Get some sopitas lipton on the side.

9. Got a bubu? "Sana Sana colita de rana" would cure your wound or belly ache.

10. You like Rum? We got plenty. Bacardi, Don Q?

We got you, we won't let you down. Do we like alcohol?

That's not even a question. We also have a "Moonshine" called "Pitorro", be aware it's like death.

11. Our native language is Spanish, scratch that, it's Spanglish.

Let's park... "Vamos a parquear el carro"

Check how the rice is doing "chequeate el arroz"

Don't freak out "No te friquees".

12. Be careful with "El Cuco" this is the Puerto Rican Boogeyman.

13. For breakfast you can have "esporsoda" with butter and dip it with your coffee.

14. You use your lips to point something out or for basically everything.

15. All the street dogs are called "Sato".

16. When we hear "Preciosa" by Marc Anthony we scream "Yo te quiero Puerto Rico" from the top of our lungs.

17. You say "Bendición" to any family member. Before you hang up on the phone they need to say "Dios te Bendiga" or the conversation is not over.

18. You use "mira" and "cosa, aquello" for anything. "Mira traeme aquello"(hey bring me that) and you are supposed to know what they want... which is sometimes not possible.

19. Your mom or dad screams your name for dinner. If they scream your complete name.... be aware they are mad. RUN. Go and eat.

20. Never trust a Danish butter cookie jar... you might find yourself with sewing utensils.

21. We are proud of who we are and who we have representing us.

Thank you to all our artists, athletes specially Monica Puig bringing the first ever gold medal in the Olympics, talk show hosts, and our Supreme Court judge Sonia Sotomayor.

You all have made us really proud. Thank you deeply.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
