Stonehill

Once upon a time at a lovely place called Stonehill College, there was a freshman dorm building called the Holy Cross Center. Affectionately called "The Sem" by all who know it, it is a unique place full of interesting people each year. So please, indulge on this journey through a list of 20 things only Sem Kids will fully understand to try to better understand the love-hate relationship its residents have with the Sem.

When Maria comes back after being gone all weekend.

Walking from the Sem to the Courts.

And then there's the walk back.

When you see someone from the Sem on the main part of campus.

When you hear a disembodied voice and then realize it's the loud speaker.

Going to Sem Brunch with the squad on a Saturday morning.

Sem Quesadillas. Enough said.

Trying to take the Sem path to class after it snows.

When someone asks if you want to go to the Commons because you've only been a total of three times this semester.

Trying to make it from the Sem to the education building.

When you have to leave super early to try to make it to Starbucks and still get to class on time.

When you realize the Ben and Jerry's freezer ran out of all the good flavors.

When you get out of class and realize it's raining, but you still have to make the long haul back to the Sem.

When one of the RA events has Domino's.

How it feels going to a Hall Council Party.

When everyone who lives here is way too friendly with holding the door open for stranger.

Having a sink in your room to brush your teeth whenever you want.

Being the closest ones to the Spoco.

That one sliver of the path that is dry while on other side of it are puddles of doom.

Last, but not least, the way your isolation from the rest of campus turns your residence community into a second family.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
