21 Things You Realize After Turning 21

Turning 21 is a very weird day. It's something you've been looking forward to for your entire life (literally), but it still seems way too soon to be happening. There's so much you can do now, you are a "full adult." As the day goes on, you realize some things that you hadn't thought of in the 20 years beforehand.

1. You no longer have to hide bottles, shot glasses, wine corks...

2. You think you'll finally be able to go to nice, non-sleazy bars, but then you remember you're a broke college student.

3. Being hungover from the night after your 21st is not nearly as funny as it is in the movies.

4. Telling people "I'm 21" somehow sounds so much more mature than saying "I'm 20."

5. It's really hard coming up with a birthday Instagram caption that isn't "twenty-fun."

6. You're SO far out of high school.

7. There seemed to be more stuff you could do when you turned 18.

Voting, R-rated films...

8. Your next "big birthday" isn't until you turn 30.

9. All of your friends are also turning 21 this year, so you have a whole lot of crazy nights ahead.

10. At twenty-one and one day, you suddenly feel a million years old.

11. Being 21 also means you're reaallyyy close to graduation.

Oh, no. I'm not ready yet.

12. You can drink wine at restaurants like a sophisticate.

13. You can even drink with your parents (weird).

14. You're now more classified as woman/man than girl/boy.

15. You're more confident in yourself than ever before.

And that confidence is only going to grow.

16. You actually have a lot to learn about alcohol.

What's the difference between ale and lager? And why are all wines French-sounding? Is it better if it's more French?

17. Sometimes a night in watching movies with wine and popcorn is more fun than going out to the club.

18. You're officially "in your twenties."

19. Adulthood is basically a myth.

20. You're still the same person you were when you were 20.

21. You're only 21 once, and you're going to make this year the best one yet.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
