Never Have I Ever Done These 21 Things (But Will In 2016)

Never have I ever completed a New Year's resolution...until now.

Have you ever played that game "Never Have I Ever" with your friends, where everyone goes around and names something they haven't done and those who have participated in the event take a drink (typically from an adult beverage)? I've always wondered who's the real winner in that game: the person who has had the most experiences, or the person who hasn't. Seeing as I am always the latter, I've tended to feel it wasn't me.

Over the past few months, I've realized how frequently I find myself saying, "I've never..." whenever someone is discussing some experience of theirs. It can be something as simple as "I've never been to Brooklyn" (which was true up until October), or something more along the lines of "I've never seen marijuana in real life" (which was also true up until last week). In general, there seems to be a lot I've yet to do.

This year, instead of having a traditional New Year's resolution, I plan to have an "I Never..." list: a list of things I have never done but would like to explore in 2016. It's almost like the opposite of trying to keep a resolution, as you want to break the truth value of all of these statements.

My list is as follows:

1: I've never gotten a tattoo (Henna or otherwise).

2: I've never seen The Royal Tenenbaums.

3: I've never been to a concert at Madison Square Garden.

4: I've never spent New Year's out of town (this I'm actually completing when I ring in 2016, but still).

5: I've never been kissed in the same way Drew Barrymore describes having never been kissed in Never Been Kissed.

6: I've never taken a ballroom dancing class (and based on my coordination, this may not be the best idea).

7: I've never tried a cronut.

8: I've never been to Central Park after a snowstorm.

9: I've never smoked anything.

10: I've never gone to an NFL game.

11: I've never been camping.

12: I've never voted in an election (but 2016 is the perfect opportunity).

13: I've never had a Netflix subscription.

14: I've never seen any episodes of Seinfeld.

15: I've never visited a beach on the West Coast.

16: I've never been to a service at a synagogue.

17: I've never really understood Snapchat.

18: I've never learned how to knit.

19: I've never tried Indian food.

20: I've never owned a pair of high heels (probably because I can't walk in them...).

And finally, 21: I've never been very good at sticking to these ideas at the beginning of a new year.

These are the things I hope to be able to say I've done by this time next year. Let's see if I can render the last one false in 2016! When you're pondering your resolution, maybe try thinking about what you haven't done over the years. Perhaps it'll inspire you to try new things!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
