Endless hours of rehearsal, sight reading, and running the same three measures a thousand times… The struggle is real for choir kids all around the world. While these things may seem miserable at times, we know that we love and thrive on the times we spend with the people that have become our second family. At the end of the day, you love it and you wouldn’t trade the relationships and hours spent rehearsing for anything else in the world.
1. Sight reading is extremely stressful.
Stress on stress on stress... Is the song over yet?
2. You know that, “let’s run it one more time!” means you’ll actually run it 12 more times.
It NEVER actually means just one more time, and we know that, yet we still get our hopes up anyway... Only to be let down 12 more times.
3. Singing in a foreign language and never really being 100 percent sure of what you’re saying.
Alright, it’s time to fake it ‘til we make it!
4. If you forget a pencil, you better pray to God that someone has an extra.
It will go one of two ways: You will either get a lot of sass from your director, or you will be super behind on notes… Actually you'll end up being stuck in both situations, which is never fun.
5. When it’s someone’s birthday and everyone breakouts into the most beautiful performance of “Happy Birthday”
known to man. It’s amazing how so many different parts can come together to sing the best rendition of “Happy Birthday” you'll ever hear.
6. If your section leader is absent you might as well quit.
So this is where it becomes obvious that the entire group has been completely lost this whole time.
7. You know concert attire is NEVER flattering.
Whether you are wearing robes or dresses, you just can’t win.
8. You understand the struggle of endless hours of rehearsal.
So someone please tell me, what is sleep? And when am I allowed to eat?
9. Sometimes you and your friends will randomly breakout into song.
A one, a two, a skiddly, diddly, doo!
10. You know the look your director gives you when you’ve messed up.
11. But you feel so great when your director gives you the look that says, “You’ve nailed it.”
12. There’s always that one kid who shows off.
So loud. So, so loud.
13. We’ve all accidentally came in early and played it off like we didn’t do it.
Just stare deep into your music and hope that no one notices, even though it's obvious everyone knows it's you.
14. Don’t lock your knees. Just don’t do it.
When in doubt just sit down on the risers before you pass out.
15. Your director has super sense and can instantly detect when someone is chewing gum in class.
You know you’ll get caught, so don’t even bother.
16. There’s always that one person who can’t blend to save their life.
Much vibrato.
17. Concert days are our game days.
I mean you are in rehearsal for hours each day, and you can’t let all that rehearsing go to waste.
18. We all have a musical crush on Eric Whitacre.
The hair, the dissonance... The man is a musical genius, need I say more?
19. If you have never secretly wished upon being a bass, you’re lying.
Seriously, how cool would it be to hit those notes?
20. You spend more time with your choir friends than your family.
But that’s okay, because after a certain amount of time, your choir friends become your second family.
21. Your director is one of the best people you know.
No matter what, you love them. They may be hard on you at times, but they do it because they care so much. And it's so inspiring to work with a person who is extremely passionate in what they do. Shoutout to all the choir directors out there, you guys rock!
