We Are Not Short, We Are Fun-Sized

Don't you just love the short stack pancakes at iHop, the miniature candies people give out at Halloween, and Little Bites muffins found at your local convenient store? These words (short stack, miniature, and little) are just adjectives, they do not define what they really are. Many people like myself, have been called miniature, short stack, and little. And well, I am here to say that I am more than just those words! No one is perfect.

Everyone has their differences whether it is shape color or size. You know how they say, "Good things come in small packages." I am a nineteen year old girl who is only 4'10 and I have faced many challenges over the years. While being short sometimes has its perks, it can get very frustrating. Short people's lives are harder than you think, and here are the reasons why;

1. People often mistake me as a fourth grader, but in reality, I'm a college student

2. When you go into a public bathroom and the mirror is taller than you and you cannot see yourself

3. Taking out the laundry can be very difficult to reach things all the way on the bottom

4. Not passing your road test after four times and being told by the instructor that you're too short to drive

5. Standing on a countertop to get something out of a cabinet when you are cooking/baking

6. Not being able to keep up with your friends while walking because they don't realize that you have short legs

7. Having to get the petite version of every pair of pants your own

8. Sitting on a chair at a table and you can't reach the ground

9. When you're in your in college dorm and get the top bunk, but have so much trouble getting down

10. When you hug all your friends and your head is up to their boob

11. When you get ID'd for rated R-movies

12. When the sun visor doesn't work and the sun is glaring in your face when you drive

13. When all your friends look down to you when they are speaking to you

14. Sitting behind a tall person at the movies

15. Being used as an armrest by your whole group of friends

16. Heels are your best friend

17. Being called 'cute'

18. Standing on shelves to get things on the top shelf in the supermarket

19. Having to literally look up to people

20. When people point out your shortness, as if you are not aware

21. Trying to hug your tall friend and you can hear their heart beating

These are just some of the struggles that us 'short' people face, but in the end, all that really matters is your self confidence. Fortunately the success you have in your life, is not based on your height but, the size of heart and the willingness to succeed in whatever you please to achieve.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
