21 Life Lessons God Has Taught Me In 21 Years

I've been alive almost 21 years. As everyone gets hype about being "twenty-fun", I've noticed myself reflecting a lot about my life thus far and the many lessons God has taught me through life. Although there is a lot more than 21 lessons I've been taught to become the woman I am today, a few of the ones I find myself reflecting the most on are...

1. Never take the time with your loved ones for granted.

2. Take care of your body--you only have one.

3. Small acts of kindness go along way.

4. It is okay to not know what you want. Hold onto God and allow Him to guide your footsteps.

5. Never put your happiness in the hands of anyone, but Jesus.

6. Respect your parents. They know what they are talking about.

7. Put down the technology and enjoy the world in front of you.

8. Be nice to everyone you meet, because everyone is fighting their own battle.

9. Forgive. You may not think they deserve it, but remember you also don't deserve to be forgiven of your sins and God still forgives you.

10. Volunteer and serve. You'll never realize the impact people may make on you when you choose to serve them.

11. Be spontaneous.

12. EAT THE DANG ICE CREAM. Treat yo self.

13. Take time to truly invest in your relationships (friends, family, love, etc.). It's nice to be appreciated--let them know you care.

14. Get out of your comfort zone. It is where God will truly blow your mind.

15. Face your fears. Step into the fullness of your potential.

16. Recognize the little things you can be thankful for. It will change your perspective on life and allow yourself to see the many ways God is blessing you.

17. You have the choice to be positive or negative about each situation we face. Fight the negativity and choose to be positive.

18. Sometimes painful things in our life is what God uses to teach us lessons that we didn't think we needed.

19. Do not live your life with regrets. If it is a dream or passion God has placed on your heart, pursue it. But be careful that it does not come before your relationship with God.

20. Prayer works and changes lives. Let's be real...Jesus is the GOAT.

21. 21 years of life goes fast, but there is an eternal life that we need to share with others every chance we get.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
